Spokane Family to Make Home in West Pakistan
A girl and a boy who attended Spokane public schools last term will be half way around the world when they resume their studies.
They are Flavia A. and Bruce Hazen, children of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Hazen, NV2515 Second. Flavia, 16, was a Lewis and Clark high school sophomore and Bruce, 7, attended Washington grade school. Next fall their address will be Lahore, West Pakistan.
Their father had been working for the United States bureau of reclamation since 1939. Since 1954 he had been area engineer for the Upper Columbia Development office in Spokane.
In April he began his work as Funeral Set consulting engineer for the Harza Engineering Company International of Chicago. The firm hes been engaged as consulting engineers for the water and power development authority of the Funeral services will be held Pakistan government. at 1 p. m. today for Dr. Emory D. Baker, 79, who had practiced
Around the World
Since April, Hazen has been around the world.
Because Lahore is 12,000 miles form (sic) Spokane whether you head east or west, Hazen was able to travel to that Asiatic capital city by way of Europe and return by Hong Kong and Hawaii.
The Spokane engineer has a healthy respect for the size of the job he and his firm are tackling.
Hazen said Pakistan's irrigation and power development problems are so large they are "just staggering."
The Far East nation already has under irrigation 25,000,000 acres, or more than is under irrigation in the entire Western United States. The thing is the Pakistan government has drainage and storage problems.
A $1,000,000,000 construction program to provide storage and lake canals to replace water to be used by India is also about to begin.
The water table is so close to the surface that salts are not being properly flushed out and 2.000,000 acres are confronted with a serious salinity problem, Hazen said.
Hot, Dry Area
In the often hot and always dry land, irrigation is an around-theyear operation, Hazen said.
Three months in the Chicago headquarters of the firm studying such problems are ahead of the Spokane man, but his family plans to get heatled toward Lahore in mid-August. They will travel in Europe before completing their trip to the distant East.
One member of the family will remain behind in the state of Washington. Charles Hazen Jr., a former Stanford university student, is working in Alaska this summer but plans to continue his studies at the University of Washington this fall.
