      INSTANTLY KILLED
      Thomas Carman, A Farmer,
      Meets Death By Burling-
      ton Train
Thomas Carman, a prominent and highly respected farmer residing three miles west of Chillicothe, was struck and instantly killed by Burlington passenger train No. 10 at 11:20 o'clock this morning, at a point a quarter of a mile west of Chillicothe.
The body was taken to Chillicothe where the inquest is being held this afternoon. Mr. Carman was bout 55 years of age and is survived by a wife and four children.
According to the story told by the trainmen and passengers on the train Carman was walking between the two Burlington tracks, going from his home to Chillicothe. Either because he did not realize how clost to him the train was or because he became confused at the sound of the whistle, Carman jumped the wrong ay nad attempted to cross the front of the endine. He was thrown about eight feet from the right of way and death resulted instantly. The train was brought to a stop and the body was taken to Chillicothe.
There were on severe marks on the body beyond being bruised considerably and the face and head baddly cut. It is supposed that Mr. Carman suffered concussion of the brain and that this was the cause of his death.
At the time of the accident the train is said to have been running at about forty miles an hour and it was impossible to stop the train when Carman steped in front of the engine. The train was in charge of Conductior J. W. Helfer of Ottumwa and Engineer J. F. Sperry of Burlington.

      T. C. Carman was born near Agency City, Iowa, Nov. 9, 1851, and died at Chillicothe, June 8, 1906.
He was united in marriage to Clara E. Sackett, June 29, 1876. To this union were born eight children, four sons and four daughters, four of whom preceded him to the spirit world.
In his younger days Mr. Carman taught school, but later turned his attention to farming, which occupation he has since followed, having lived in this community twenty-five years.
In the year 1889, he united with the Methodist Episcopal church in Chillicothe; later, in the year 1892, he changed his membership to the Columbia church on the Chillicothe charge, of which he remained a faithful member until the day of his death, and as Sunday school superintendent, stewart, trustee, and Bible class teacher, he has filled a large place in the church, and will be greatly missed.
He leaves to mourn his death a wife and four children, two sons and two daughters, Rolla E., Herbert E., Della J., and Nelle La Rue, also two brothers and five sisters, beside many other relatives and friends.
He was a kind husband and a devoted father and will be sadly missed in the home and community.
