John Alton "Jack" Barrett was manager of the Barrett Logging Company in the Newberry area of Michigan's Upper Peninsula. In the 1940s, he acquired four "forties" (160 acres) of land near the Tahquamenon Falls and ultimately sold all but two acres to the State of Michigan to become part of the Tahquamenon Falls State Park.

He and his wife, Mimi, built a gift shop and concession stand to provide a place for visitors to rest and get a bite to eat while visiting the falls, also providing parking and through his work with the state, access via the trails to the falls.

Descendants still own the area and run the Tahquamenon Falls Brewery & Camp 33 Gift Shop (Camp 33 was the 33rd camp built by the Barrett Logging Company, in 1950). Jack's granddaughter, Lark Ludlow, became one of the earliest female brewers in Michigan and the brewery itself was opened in 1996 as just the fourth brewery in the U.P.). His grandson, Barrett Ludlow, runs Camp 33.
