Marilyn Leveque's unique approach to teaching brought out best in kids
By AMY LIMBERT
SENTINEL STAFF WRITER
Whether Marilyn Belden Leveque's students were learning about the ocean or practicing multiplication tables, it usually wasn't just from a textbook.
Leveque's children and former colleagues said her unique approach to teaching, often through music, brought out the best in her students.
Leveque, a former Orange City Elementary School teacher, died Tuesday after a battle with cancer. The Deltona resident was 71. A native of Water-bury, Conn., Leveque moved to Deltona in 1979 and taught at Orange City Elementary from 1980 through 1997.
Daughter Elissa Ewing of Deltona said her mother preferred to approach the curriculum with "multi-sensory" teaching. Leveque's children said she dedicated her life to education. For example, if the class was learning about trees, Leveque would bring in a live tree, Ewing said.
"She taught how kids should learn," teacher Susie Wilson said. "She taught through music so much of the time. It was fun. . . . They planted gardens. She made learning live for the kids."
Wilson, a teacher at Seville Public School, taught with Leveque at Orange City Elementary for many years.
Ewing said that in one of her mother's last evaluations from Orange City Elementary, the teacher was praised for tailoring the programs around the students' needs, such as assigning individual homework at each student's level. It commended Leveque for her creative-writing ability and her ability to set the students up for success.
Lynda Connell, a teacher at Orange City Elementary, said Leveque had a gift for seeing talents in children and drawing them out.
Connell said her friend and former co-worker was the kind of teacher others aspired to be like.
"Educationally, she was at the top," Connell said. "She was tremendous. She made us all feel very special."
Son Tom Belden of Deltona said he remembers his mother's teaching style as very enthusiastic. Leveque cultivated her unique teaching style from the beginning.
"In the early 1970s, in the public-school system, teachers had to go by the textbooks but my mom wasn't like that," said son Jim Belden of Middleburg, Conn. He said she founded her own early learning center in Connecticut, called Creation Plus, and developed her own curriculum.
Leveque earned a bachelor's degree in elementary education and a master's degree in research from teachers colleges in Connecticut. Son Mike Belden, also of Middleburg, Conn., recalled his mother's willingness to open their home to those in need.
"We would have young children stay at our house over the weekends while the young parents tried to reconcile their relationship," he wrote in a tribute. "We had teenagers staying with us when they were having troubles with their parents."
Leveque also is survived by another son, Robert Belden Jr. of Woodbury, Conn.; a twin brother, Bruce Randall of Beaver, Utah; nine grandchildren; and three step-grandchildren.
Services are Saturday at 3:30 p.m. at Baldauff Family Funeral Home, 1233 Saxon Blvd. in Orange City.
