Notes |
- Mary Alsop is described, at the time of her marriage, by Mrs. Lamb, as
"remarkable for personal beauty - face oval, with a clear brunette complexion, delicately formed features, expressive blue eyes, black hair, and exquisite teeth, her motions all grace, her bearing gracious, her voice musical, and her education exceptional." Her husband, Hon. Rufus King, is described by Mrs. Lamb in same connection, as "thirty-three and passing for the most eloquent man in the United States."

Mary Frogat Alsop
Birth unknown
Death 14 Apr 1772
Burial
Trinity Churchyard
Manhattan, New York County (Manhattan), New York, USA
Born c.1744, 28-year-old Mary Alsop (nee Frogat) was the wife of the noted John Alsop, who later served in the Continental Congress. She had married the wealthy merchant, who was some twenty years her senior, on June 6, 1766. Three years later she gave birth to their only child, a daughter named Mary, who in time became the wife of Rufus King, a signer of the US Constitution.
Mrs. Alsop's gravestone, like that of her father-in-law's nearby, appears to be the work of the noted Manhattan carver John Zuricher. It is somewhat unusual in that it was not carved brown sandstone, as were the majority of gravestones in the NY-NJ area during the colonial era.
The inscription reads:
"IN MEMORY OF
MARY ALSOP, WIFE OF
JOHN ALSOP, MERCHANT,
WHO DEPARTED THIS LIFE
THE 14TH OF APRIL 1772
AGED 28 YEARS"
