      Miss Kernochan Bride of Courtland Smith

      Miss Mary S. Kernochan, younger daughter of J. Frederic Kernochan of 907 Fifth ave., and Courtland Smith were married this afternoon st the home of Miss Kernochan by the Rev. Dr. John Lovejoy Elliott in the presence of a few relatives and intimate friends.

      This will come as a surprise to their friends, as no public announcement was made of their engagement. The bride-elect la the sister of Miss Eweretta Kernochan and of Chief Justice Frederic Kernochan of the Court of Special Sessions.

      Mr. Smith is a son of Orlando J. Smith. His marriage to the former Miss Elinor Cary ended in a divorce on January 16 in Sonora, Mexico. He has two children. Miss Evelyn Smith, a student at Foxcroft School, and Orlando J. Smith, who is at St. Mark's School.

      Courtland Smith, Film Executive For Early Newsreels, Is Dead

      Courtland Smith, a former motion?picture executive, died Sunday at the ranch of his daughter, Mrs. John Barnes Mull, in Santa Fe, N.M. His age was 86.

      Mr. Smith, who attended the University of Wisconsin, was the son of Maj. Orlando Jay Smith, founder of the Ameri can Press Association, a syn dicate for country newspapers. The son later became president of the concern.

      Mr. Smith went to Washing ton in 1921 as Assistant Post master General for Postal Sav ings under Postmaster General Will H. Hays. Mr. Smith, a brother?in?law of Arthur Bris bane, editor in chief of Hearst publications, had actively sup= ported Warren G. Harding in his bid for the Presidency.

      In the early nineteen?twen ties, when the Motion Picture Producers and Distributors of America was organized, with Mr. Hays as president, Mr. Smith was named vice presi dent and secretary.

      Mr. Smith later became vice president of Fox Film Corpora tion and helped originate the early sound newsreel, Fox Movietone News. He produced short sound subjects featuring Gertrude Lawrence, Beatrice Lillie, Robert Benchley and others.

      He organized the News reel Theater, which showed newsreel and documentary sound. shorts. In the nineteen thirties he was an organizer of the Trans?Lux Theaters and then became president of Pathd News, Inc., which he expanded throughout the world.

      His first marriage, to the late Elinor Cary, ended in divorce. His second marriage was to the late Mary Stuart Kernochan, a sister of the late Chief Justice Frederic Kernochan of the. City Court of Special Sessions.

      Mr. Smith had lived for two years in Pembroke Park, Dublin, and had returned to the United States last January.

      Surviving, besides his daughter, are three grand children and five great?grand children.

      A memorial service will be held Sept. 11 at 2 P.M. at Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, Tarry town, N.Y.

      Courtland Smith services held

      Courtland Smith, 86, died at his home in Pojoaque early Sunday morning following several weeks' illness.

      Mr. Smith, retired, was a former resident of New York City, and had been a resident of New Mexico for the past seven months.

      He is survived by his daughter, Mrs. John Barnes Mull of Pojoaque; three grandchildren, 13 grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Private services and cremation were held in Albuquerque today. Memorial services will be held in Sleepy Hollow, N.Y., at a time to be announced later. Arrangements through Memorial Chapel.
