      Stacy Potts4 was editor of the Emporium of Trenton, N. J., was a lawyer and Judge of the Supreme Court of New Jersey, was elder of the First Presbyterian Church, of Trenton, was at times delegate to the General Assembly. He was the son of William3 and Mary Gardiner (Theophilus), of Philadelphia, the grandson of Stacy2 who removed from Trenton to Harrisburg, Pa., returned to Trenton, was Mayor for many years and a prominent Friend, and Esther Pancoast (John), of Bucks County, the great-grandson of Thomas1, [Footnote: He probably was the son of Thomas Stacy 1, who came to Burlington in the "Shield," 1760.] who lived at "White Hill."

      Stacy G. Potts, justice of the Supreme Court, studied in the office of Lucius H. Stockton, and later in the office of Garret D. Wall, and was licensed as an attorney in 1827.

      He was born in Harrisburg in 1799 and came to Trenton in 1808 to live with his grandfather, Stacy Potts, who was then mayor of Trenton. He learned the printing trade and edited the Emporium for a period of time.

      As a Jackson Democrat, he was elected to the General Assembly twice. In 1831 he was appointed clerk of the Court of Chancery, an office that he held for ten years. In 1852 he was appointed a justice of the Supreme Court and served for seven years and was regarded as an able and conscientious judge, very popular with the Bar and with the public generally.

      He was married three times, first to Cornelia C. Howe (1793-1818), daughter of The Reverend Samuel Blanchard Howe and Mary S. Howe.

      He married second Ellen Eliza Burrowes (1803-1842), daughter of Nathaniel Burrowes and Elizabeth Stout, on September 5, 1822 in Hunterdon, New Jersey, USA.

      He married third Hannah Moore (born about 1804) on June 3, 1860 in Trenton, Mercer, New Jersey, USA.

      He was deeply religious and took a prominent part in church work. He lived on West State Street, just east of the State House, and died in 1865.

      His obituary was published in the Hunterdon County Democrat Apr. 19, 1865, Vol. XXVII, No. 35 (1390) as follows:

      Death of Hon. Stacy G. Potts Hon. Stacy G. Potts, late Associate Justice of the Supreme Court, died at his residence in Trenton, on Sunday evening, the 9th inst., in the 66th year of his age. He has been an invalid for several years.
