Alvin L. Spitler, a retired advertising copywriter at the Post-Dispatch, died Sunday of cancer at his home in Green Valley, Ariz. He was 75.

In Arizona, Mr. Spitler was president of the Friends of Madera Canyon, an organization that works with the Forest Service to preserve land for public use. The group began planting a memorial grove of trees last week in one area of the Coronado National Forest as a memorial to Mr. Spitler and his daughter, Laura Eliot Spitler.
