Mrs. Ada S. Purdy, 87, Linked To legend of Sleepy Hollow'
Private funeral services for Mrs. Ada Spice Purdy, 87, of 398 Balnbrldge St., will be held tomorrow at the Fairchild Chapel, 951 Atlantic Ave. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery, Kew Gardens.
Mrs. Purdy, widow of David Suydam Purdy, who was connected with the Bank of New York for many years, died Tuesday. She had resided in Brooklyn 50 years.
Of Dutch ancestry on her mother's side, Mrs. Purdy was a direct descendant of Katherina Van Tassel, well known character in Washington Irving's Sketch Book story, "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow." Her paternal grandfather was Sir Edward Spice, who was knighted by King George IV of England.
Mrs. Purdy was born in Tarrytown, N. Y., and before coming to Brooklyn, lived for a number of years in Jamaica. Her husband, a native of Hollis, died many years ago. She had been a reader of the Brooklyn Eagle for 65 years.
A daughter, Violet Purdy, survives. There also are three grandchildren.
