Today we grieve the loss of a great man. John "Bryan" Caricaturist died in his home surrounded by family on May 30, 2018. He was born on Nov. 9, 1949, in Lompoc, Calif.
In 1968, he earned his private pilot license. Bryan served as a quartermaster in the Navy during Vietnam. He and Jill Spurway, high school sweethearts, married and then enrolled in San Jose State University's aeronautical program.
Poetry by Robert Service, read to him by his father, lead him to Alaska full of ambition. He squared off with the Aleutians, pitting his ability against the most powerful weather in the world.
Bryan's flying experience and leadership qualities led to roles as an instructor, Chief Pilot and Vice President, Director of Operations at Pen Air, retiring in 2013 after 38 years. These roles allowed Bryan to shape the lives and careers of countless aviators. Recently, Bryan was recognized by the FAA, receiving the Wright Brothers Master Pilot Award.
In addition to a love of flying, he enjoyed kayaking and motorcycles. His greatest joy was spending time with family.
He is preceded in death by his parents, John Baptiste and Leslie Alice Carricaburu; and sister, Dale Lewis.
He is survived by wife, Jill; sons, John Brent and Justin Elliot Carricaburu; grandsons, John Blake, Noah Ruiz, Elijah Thomas, Simon Baptiste, Elliot Abram and Sebastian David Carricaburu; brother and sisters, Robert, Sally, Linda Carricaburu and Janet Bailey; aunt, Frances Carricaburu; and numerous relatives in Alaska and California.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on June 12, 2018, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Wasilla, Alaska. The burial will be at Oak Hill Cemetery in Ballard, Calif., on June 20, 2018, at 10 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, please make donations in Bryan's honor to Career Tech High School, Aviation Program, 2472 North Seward Meridian Parkway, Wasilla, AK 99654.
Arrangements were made with Janssen's Mat-Su Funeral Home.
