      JAMES A. CANFIELD

      James A. Canfield, 85, of Arlington, brother of the late Dorothy Canfield Fisher, noted Vermont author, died Friday at Putnam Memorial Hospital.

      A summer resident of Arlington, Mr. Canfield had a winter home in Coconut Grove, Fla. He was the retired president of the Canfield Paper Co. in New York City.

      Just before his death Friday, Mr. Canfield said, "I always wanted to live to be 85 and I made it.? His death came the day after his 85th birthday.

      Born in St. Joseph, Mich., on May 28, 1874, Mr. Canfield was the son of James H and Flavia (Camp) Canfield. He was a graduate of the University of Nebraska.

      Survivors include two sons, Charles E. Canfield of Ardsley, N.Y., now president of the paper company, and Atty. Robert E. Canfield of New York City, five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

      Services were conducted Sunday at St James Episcopal Church in Arlington by the Rev. Clement G. Belcher, rector.

      ARLINGTON, Vt., May 8--Charles E. Canfield, board chairman of the Canfield Paper Company of New York, died Sunday at Putnam Memorial Hospital, Bennington. He was 72 years old and had lived here since his retirement in 1963.

      Mr. Canfield, who had represented New York paper merchants in negotiations with labor unions, was president of the Paper Merchants Association of New York in 1951?52.

      He rose through the ranks in the family concern, which was established by his grandfather, James A Canfield, and Carl A. Newfang in New York in 1906. He joined the company in 1923, a year after he graduated from Dartmouth College, and became a salesman and then manager of the Philadelphia office.

      Between 1942 and 1946, Mr. Canfield served in Washington as a nonsalaried civilian on loan to the War Procurement Board, controlling the procurement and allocation of printing papers.

      In 1946 he succeeded Mr. Newfang, who was retiring, as president of Canfield and held that post until 1963, when he became chairman.

      His aunt was the popular novelist, Dorothy Canfield Fisher.

      Mr. Canfield leaves his wife, Dorothy; a son, James; two daughters, Mrs. Molly Falk and Mrs. Nancy Dominie, and a brother, Robert E. Canfield.

      Charles E. Canfield of Arlington, 72, dies
      Charles E. Canfield, 72, of Arlington, husband of Dorothy (Laird) Canfield, died early Sunday morning at Putnam Memorial Hospital after a long illness.
      Mr. Canfield, nephew of the late author Dorothy Canfield Fisher, was born in Columbus, Ohio, Nov 3, 1900, son of James A. and Stella (Elliot) Canfield. He moved to Arlington about 20 years ago from Pleasantville, N.Y., after having spent more than 25 years here as a summer resident. He graduated from Dartmouth College in 1922, and during World War II served as a procurement specialist and consultant for the Office of the Quartermaster General.
      At the time of his death, Mr. Canfield was chairman of the board of the Canfield Paper Co. of New York City and previously had been president of the company. While living in Pleasantville, he was active on the village and town school boards, and he served the town of Arlington for many years as a member of the Arlington School Board.
      He was a member of St. James Episcopal Church in Arlington and also belonged to the Equinox Country Club in Manchester.
      Survivors besides his wife are two daughters, Mrs. Rudy (Nancy) Domenic of Atherton, Calif., and Mrs. Richard (Mollie) Falk of Fayetteville, N.Y.; one son James E. Canfield of South Burlington, Vt.; one brother, Robert F. Canfield of Buena Vista, Va.; seven grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.
      There will be no calling hours at the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home in Arlington.
      A memorial service will be held on Wednesday at 2 pm in St. James Episcopal Church, Arlington, with the Rev. Lawrence A. Sherwin, rector, officiating, following by a committal service in Evergreen Cemetery in Arlington.
      The family urgently requests that no flowers be given. If friends desire, memorial contributions may be made to the Arlington Recreation and Park Committee, Arlington, or the the St. James Episcopal Church, Arlington, through the office of the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home, Arlington, 05250.
