John Redwood Fisher, 75, died in his sleep early Monday in his home in Arlington. Mrs. Fisher died November 9, 1958, at the age of 79.

Mr. Fisher contracted a severe case of grippe in April from which he never recovered. On Sunday he was too ill to attend the funeral in Arlington of James Canfield, his wife?s brother, who died on Friday.

Mrs Fisher once wrote that her ancestors ?had not come to New England to be Puritans, and being British to the core, they saw no reason for giving up their ideas just because other people disapproved."

?They continued stubbornly to hold Anglican services to the stately decorum of which they were much devoted," she wrote.

Funeral services were held Wednesday at 3 p.m. in the St James Episcopal Church in Arlington, which the early Canfields helped found.

The Rev. Clement G. Belcher, rector, officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery

John R Fisher was born August 5, 1883 in Hoboken, N.J., the son of a physician, Dr. and Mrs. William Fisher. In 1904 he received an AB degree from Columbia University.

The Fishers were married on May 9, 1907, and immediately settled in Arlington where they resided, except for occasional trips to Europe for the rest of their lives. Although Mrs. Fisher was born in Kansas, Arlington was the home of her family and ancestors, she wrote since 1764 when the town was founded.

When World War I broke out, Mr. Fisher went to France as an Ambulance driver with the American Field Service and was discharged at the end of the war with the rank of Captain.

He was the Arlington Representative to the Vermont Legislature in 1925 to 1937 and served for 10 years (from 1939 to 1949) as chairman of the State Board of Education.

He was also school director in Arlington from 1932 to 1935 and was chairman of the Arlington Memorial School building committee. He held an honorary LL.D. degree from the University of Vermont.

He took an active (interest in his wife?s writings and formally collaborated with her on a collection of short stories, "Home Fires in France,? published in 1916.

Survivors are one daughter, Mrs. J. Paul Scott of Bar Harbor, Maine, and her four children, John Paul, David and Miss Vivian Scott, and Mrs. Eugene Franck of South Weymouth, Mass.; also one great-grandchild.

The Fishers? only son, Capt. James Canfield Fisher, was killed in action on Luzon in the Philippine Islands on January 11, 1945.

On April 12, Mr. Fisher had appeared at a public dinner in Arlington to accept, on behalf of the Martha Canfield Memorial Library of Arlington, the first annual Dorothy Canfield Fisher Award of the Book-of-the-Month Club.

Mrs. Fisher had been a member of the editorial board of the club for 25 years. The award consists of $5,000 worth of (books to be given over several years.

The Memorial Library was named in honor of Mrs Fisher's aunt, ?beloved Aunt Martie.? Mr. Fisher called her when he accepted the award.
