Dr. S. Lee Crump, 44, Dies; Statistician for A-Projects

Dr. S. Lee Crump, 44, chief statistician for atomic energy projects at the University of Rochester since 1948, died yesterday (April 18, 1963) in Strong Memorial Hospital after a long illness. He lived at 830 Landing Road N., Brighton.

Dr. Crump was particularly noted for his part in the Browning-Crump Hospital-Bed Use Survey on which he worked with Dr. Francis E. Browning, University of Rochester assistant professor of medicine and community health. The survey indicated the medical care of almost 20 percent of patients in local hospitals might be met at other facilities or home.

Marion B. Folsom, head of the Patient Care Planning Council, under whose auspices the survey was conducted, said last night in Winter Park. Fla., "The Public Health Survey in Washington, D. C. said the survey was one of the best ever made. Though I didn't know Dr. Crump until the survey was made, he obviously had a remarkable ability."

Dr. Crump also had started a study on medical care for the aged. The three-year study, sponsored by a Ford Foundation grant, got under way a few months ago.

Dr. Crump was born in Denver, Colo., March 3, 1919. He came to Pittsford as a youth and attended high school there. He received his bachelor of science degree from Cornell University in 1942 and was granted his Ph. D. degree from Iowa State University five years later. He served on the Iowa staff for several years.

Dr. Crump came to the U. of R. in 1949 as head of the statistics section of the atomic energy project and an assistant professor of radiation biology. He was named an associate professor of radiation biology in 1954.

Dr. Crump served as president of the American Biometrics Society in 1954. He was a fellow in the American Statistical Assn. and the Royal Statistical Society and Sigma Xi, national scientific honorary society. He was also a member of the American Assn. for the Advancement of Science.

Dr. Crump is survived by, his widow, Marjorie; two sons, Clifford and Stephen, and a daughter, Sandra.
