      Memoir Abstract:
      Arthur Johnson Sackett was born at Fort George Island, Duval County, FL, on May 25, 1884, the son of John Warren Sackett and Louise Hamilton Johnson Sackett. He died at St. Augustine, FL, on October 30, 1975.
      «tab»He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1906 with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering. He began his professional career with the Pennsylvania Railroad on their shield and compressed air tunnels from New Jersey to New York, under the Hudson River across Manhattan Island, under the East River, to and including the freight terminal at Sunnyside yard in Queens, NY. He worked as Chief of Survey Party and Inspector on this work. Upon completion of the Railroad in 1911 he began work with the Mason & Hanger Co., Inc., as an Assistant Engineer on their COntracts for the New York City Water Supply Catskill Aqueduct, and the New York City subway system. His association with this company continued for 65 years.
      «tab»By 1917 he had become Chief Engineer of the comapny, and was directing operations for the U.S. Army Camp Zachary Taylor at Louisville, KY, and Embarkation and Remount Facilities for the Ports of Charleston, SC, and Newark, NJ, in support of World War I.
      «tab»During the war he seved as Major in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
      «tab»Following the war he continued as Chief Engineer for the Mason & Hanger Co. on the construction of six sections of the Pennsylvania State Highway System and five miles of rock tunnel construction for the New England Power Company in Readsboro, VT.
      «tab»He was elected President and Director of the Company in 1929.
      «tab»Some of the projects with which Mr. Sackett was associated include the East River subway tunnels in New York City, the Lincoln Tunnel, the Grand Coulee Dam, and the George Washington Bridge.
      «tab»From 1947, continuing till his death in 1975, Mr. Sackett's employer, the Mason & Hanger-Silas Mason Co. Inc., some times in joint venture with other contractors, performed architect, engineer, management, construction, Plant Operation Services for government and private industrial concerns, on projects such as Five Facilities for U.S. Atomic Energy Commission's Nuclear Weapons Programs, including the Nevada Test Site, U.S. Air Force's Titan Missle Bases, U.S. Army Ordnance Ammunition Plants in Iowa, Nebraska, Illinois, and Indiana, N.A.S.A. Michoud Facility at New Orleans, and the New York CIty $800 million Sewage System.
      «tab»Mr. Sackett became Chairman of the Board of the Mason & Hanger Co., Inc. in 1953. In 1955 he was named Chairman of the Board of the "Mason & Hanger-Silas Mason CO., Inc." when the Silas Mason Co., Inc. merged with the parent company, The Mason & Hangar Co, Inc., a position that he held until his death.
      «tab»Mr. Sackett became one of our country's outstanding men in the field of construction of subaqueous shield-driven compressed air tunnels. He helped pioneer many methods and improvements to make this work safer and more efficient. He had an unusual ability of surrounding himself with men of extraordinary vision and courage of their convictions.
      «tab»Mr. Sackett was married to Miss Ethel Lee Clancy, of Chillicothe, OH, on September 3, 1907. They had one child, a daughter, Virginia Lee, who died as a teenager. After a divorce from Ethel, he was married to Miss Julie Hopkins of St. Augustine, FL. Julie preceded him in death. They had one child, and adopted daughter, Louise.
      «tab»Mr. Sackett was an active member of the Episcopal Church, having served as Senior Warden at churches in Gramercy Park, NY City, and Charles City, VA.
      «tab»He was a past President of the Associated General Contractors of America, New York City Chapter, a charter member of The Moles organization, a member of the New York City Engineers Club, the American Ordnance Assoc., The Society of American MIlitary Engineers, a Mayor of the Village of Shoreham, Long Island, NY. Mr. Sackett maintained homes at Shoreham, NY, Riverview Farm on the James River near Charles City, VA, and at St. Augustine, FL.
      «tab»He was licensed Professional Engineer in New York, Wisconsin and Florida. His hobbies included walking, reading, swimming, horseback riding, and the breeding and racing of thoroughbred horses. Mr. Sackett was survived by his wife Ethel, a brother, two grandchlidren, and a number of nieces and nephews. He joined the American Society of Civil Engineers in 1904 as a Junior Member, became an Associate in 1914, a full Member in 1920, and a Fellow in 1959, a position he held at his death.
