      Dear Mr. Sackett,

Fortunately for you, we are a paid staff in the Library and Musuem, and part of our job is to answer these genealogical questions.

There was only one Masonic home (now called Villages) at the time William was around. It was, and still is, in Elizabethtown (about halfway between Lancaster and Harrisburg). The others, in Sewickley, Warminster, and Lafayette Hill, are all quite new (1990's on up).

The Masonic record of William W. Sackett is, as shown in Membership Book 3-2, p. 355: Age: 37; Occupation: Carpenter; Residence: Wilkes-Barre; All Degrees in Landmark Lodge No. 442 (Wilkes-Barre): Entered Apprentice November 12, 1873; Fellow Craft January 14, 1874, Master Mason February 25, 1874. Suspended for non-payment of dues December 9, 1912; Shown in Membership Book 16, p. 330, he was restored to good standing (meaning he paid back dues), and re-elected to membership (admitted into his same lodge as a Master Mason) April 10, 1914; Age: 78; Residence: Elizabethtown. Died: 1915 December 16. That's it: a full record. No other information.

      Best,
      Glenys A. Waldman

William W. Sackett, 1836-c1915, is my 2nd Great Grandfather and lived in Wilkes-Barre, PA. I have just received information that he was in a Masonic Home when he died. The information is that it was in Elizabeth, PA. Looking at a map, Elizabeth is near Pittsburgh with a Home there and in Sewickley. I also saw on your website that you have a facility in Elizabethtown, PA. I don't know if any or all of these facilities were in operation around 1915. In order to live in a Masonic Home I assume you have to be a member of the Masons. What I would like to establish is whether William W. Sackett was a Freemason, and if he passed away while in a Masonic Home and the date he died.
I understand the number of requests you must get and also realize the volunteer basis of your position. As a volunteer in several organizations myself, I understand the demands on your time. Any efforts to locate information are greatly appreciated. If there are any costs associated with finding or copying information, I am more that willing to cover them.
      Sincerely,
      Thomas C. Smith

      DEATHS

At her home, 614 Hazle street, last night occurred the death of Mrs. C. P. Kepler (sic), one of the most respected residents of the city. Deceased was 47 years of age and had resided in this city practically all her life. Complications with which she suffered for some time caused her demise. Besides her husband she is survived by one son Edward, two daughters Violet and Pearl, and the following brothers and sisters: George Sackett, of Monticello, N. Y.; Harry Sackett, Mrs. Owen Lloyd and Mrs. George Shaffer, all of this city; also by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Sackett of this city.

Note: Several newspapers carried versions of this obituary, all misspelling the surname as Kepler. However, funeral notices published in several Wilkes-Barre newspapers on October 3 and 5 correctly spell the surname as Ketler.

James W. Sackett, 1803-1887, of Lumberland, Sullivan County, N.Y; Hickory Run, Carbon County, Pa., and Allegan County, Mich., son of William W. and Susan Smith Sackett, was married, July 31, 1834, to Nancy Beers, 1815-1890, daughter of Silas Beers, of Neversink, Sullivan County, N.Y. He was by occupation a surveyor, millwright, lumberman and farmer. Early in life he became an ardent abolitionist and his house in Sullivan County was at one time a station on the so called Under Ground Railway, leading from the South to Canada. His removal from Sullivan County, N.Y., to Carbon County, was in 1835, and while residing there he built a number of mills for his brother in law, Isaac Gould. After remaining in Carbon County a few years he returned to his home in Sullivan County, and for some years held the offices of school director and assessor of his town. His removal to Allegan County, Mich., was in the year 1854. He there built several large mills and served his town as Justice of the Peace and Postmaster. A short time before his death he returned to Pennsylvania, and died and was buried at Wilkes Barre in that State.
