J. Oliver Macdonald, DDS, Olympic Champion in 1924
FLEMINGTON -- J. Oliver Macdonald, DDS, 69, of 100-B2 N. Main St., formerly of Paterson, died unexpectedly Saturday in the University of Pennsylvania Hospital, Philadelphia.
Dr. Macdonald was a member of the gold medal-winning 1600-meter relay team of the 1924 Olympics.
He opened dental offices in Paterson and Haledon in 1927 and practiced there for over 34 years. Retiring, in 1959, he moved to Flemington, where he went into the real estate business. A licensed broker, Dr. Macdonald was the Borough of Flemington's first consumer affairs assistance officer.
Dr. Macdonald attended Lafayette College and was graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1927. He was born, raised and educated in Paterson and was a member of Joppa Lodge 29, F and AM, Paterson, since 1929. He also was a member of Psi Phi Omega and Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternities.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Almgren Funeral Home, 336 Broadway, Paterson. Interment will be in Laurel Grove Memorial Park, Totowa.
Memorial donations may be made to the Flemington Rescue Squad.
He leaves his wife, the former Beatrice Garrity; a son, Jay Macdonald of Egg Harbor; a daughter, Miss Judith Macdonald of Denver, Coio., and a granddaughter, Shereen.
