      Rites Wednesday for Ethel Beshara

      Funeral services for Ethel E. Beshara, 63, who died unexpectedly Friday at her home in Deadwood, will be Wednesday at 10 a.m. at Wells-Ruth Funeral Home.

      The Rev. Cal Petersen of the United Methodist Church will officiate and burial will be at the Black Hills National Cemetery.

      Mrs. Beshara was born at Jeffers, Minn, on Sept. 30, 1913 to Mr. and Mrs. Harry O. Eatherton. She attended schools at Sturgis, Whitewood, and Black Hills State College.

      She was married on June 13, 1941 at Broadus, Mont to Joseph P. Beshara. They had made Deadwood their home continuously except when he served in the military.

      At the time of her death she was office manager and co-owner of Beshara Motors of Deadwood and was a general distributor for the Slimgym Company.

      Surviving are her husband Joseph of Deadwood; two sons, Joseph Paul and Larry Dean, both at home; two brothers, Everett Eatherton of Anaconda, Mont., and John R. Eatherton of Deadwood; a sister, Grace Thomas of Piedmont and several nieces and nephews.

      Mrs. Beshara was preceded in death by her parents and six brothers.

      A memorial has been established to the Cancer Society.

      Hazel I. Eatherton

      WHITEWOOD -- Hazel I. Eatherton, 83, Whitewood, died Monday. June 24, 2002, at the Abington Memorial Hospital in Abington, Pa.

      Visitation will be Thursday from 8 a.m. until 9 p.m. at Klnkade Funeral Chapel and Friday one hour prior to the services at the church in Whitewood.

      Funeral services will be held Friday, June 28, 2002, at 1:30 p.m. at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Whitewood, with Rev. David Baer officiating. Burial will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery.

      Hazel was born December 3, 1918, at Grindstone, S.D., to Oliver Axel and Martha O'Lena (Wold) Olson. She attended school through the eighth grade in Haakon County and graduated from Philip High School in 1935. Hazel was baptized and confirmed in the Bridges Creek Lutheran Church at Hilland, S.D., in 1937. She was employed during WWII as an accountant in the photo department at Lockheed Aircraft. Hazel married John R. Eatherton In Los Angeles. Calif., on April 12. 1944. The couple owned and operated J & I cafes and souvenir shops in Sclo, Ore., Whitewood, S.D., New Underwood, S.D., and the J & I Gift Shop in Deadwood, S.D.

      Hazel was the deputy superintendent of the Haakon County School District. She taught in Haakon County and Pennington County schools and at Philip, New Underwood, Mobridge. Lead, and Deadwood. She was instrumental in organizing the first Deadwood Junior High Library. Hazel retired as the Junior High Librarian in Deadwood.

      Hazel was a member of the American Lutheran Church, Luther League; SDEA; NBA; ACEJ; AAUW; Delta Kappa Gamma; the Deadwood Chapter; Lead-Deadwood Education Association; was president of the Haakon County Education Association; Whitewood Senior Citizens; was a trustee for the Whitewood Library; State Library; Retired Teachers Association; and was a 4-H leader in Haakon County. She received many awards for her work at Lockheed. She also was listed in Who's Who in Elementary and Secondary Education. She was Teacher of the Year for her outstanding work in the "Reading is Fundamental" program. Hazel was a very dedicated teacher, especially in the individualized programs.

      Her hobbies included painting, gardening, flowers, reading, sewing, and traveling.

      Survivors include one son, John Roger Eatherton II, Chalfont. Pa.; one daughter, Janet Lucille Eatherton Kinsley, Nazareth, Pa.; seven grandchildren. Celeste Nadlne, Melanie Linette, John Roger III, Robert Laurel, and Caitlin Jane Eatherton, and Richard Allen and Daniel Kent Kinsley; two sisters, Marjorie Angela Eggen, Lebanon, Ore., and Martha Lucille Hill, Byromville, Ga.; one brother, John Harold Olson, Scotts Mills. Ore.; nine great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

      Her parents, her husband, one sister, and one grandson preceded her in death.

      A memorial will be established at BHSU for a scholarship to assist a student from Philip, Deadwood/Lead, Whitewood, or Sturgis who is pursuing a career in Library Science.

      John R. Eatherton, 64

      Funeral services for John R. Eatherton, 64, will be Tuesday at 10 a.m. at F. O. Jolley Funeral Home in Sturgis with Chaplain James Forbes officiating.

      Burial will be in Black Hills National Cemetery with military honors.

      Mr. Eatherton died Wednesday evening at Sioux Falls VAMC. Visitation will continue Monday and Tuesday from 1-9 p.m. and until funeral time.

      A memorial has been established. F. O. Jolley Funeral Home, Sturgis, is in charge of the arrangements.

      Eatherton was born Nov. 27, 1918 at Coleraine, Minn., to Harry and Fannie Eatherton, then later moved to Fulton, S.D. with his family and began school there. The family later moved to Whitewood where he finished school.

      On Oct. 24, 1942 he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served overseas with the 16th Armored Division before his discharge on Nov. 3, 1945. For several years he ranched at Cottonwood, S.D. then owned and operated J & I Cafe and Gift Shops in New Underwood, Whitewood, and Deadwood and at Scio, Ore. He had also managed Pierre Frozen Foods and owned and operated a store and post office at Edson, S.D.

      He married Hazel Irene Olson April 12, 1944 at Hollywood, Calif. He was a member of the VFW and Whitewood Chamber of Commerce.

      Surviving are his widow, Hazel of Whitewood; one son, Roger of Sacramento, Calif.; one daughter, Janet Lucille Kinsley, Saudi Arabia; six grandchildren, Richard and Daniel Kinsley, and Celeste, Melanie, John R. and Robert Eatherton.

      Other survivors are one sister, Grace Thomas, Piedmont; one brother Pat (Everett) Eatherton, Custer, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

      He was preceded in death by his parents, six brothers, one sister and one grandson.

      Ernest Eatherton Rites Scheduled On Tuesday

      STURGIS -- Funeral services for Ernest Eatherton will be conducted Tuesday, 2 p.m. in the F. O. Jolley Funeral Home by the Rev. Dr. Harold Wagar of First Methodist Church.

      Burial will be in Whitewood Cemetery.

      Eatherton died Saturday morning in a Rapid City hospital.

      He was born Sept. 19, 1907 in Marble City: Colo., a son of Harry and Fannie Eatherton. The family lived in Whitewood for many years.

      He married Elsie Shoening, Oct. 27, 1933, in Lemmon. They farmed in the Whitewood-Sturgis area for several years. From 1947 until 1959 they operated Black Hills Auto Salvage at Deadwood.

      They then moved to Quinn and he operated an auto salvage and blacksmith shop.

      Surviving are his widow; two sons, Joel of Merriman, Neb., and Richard, Quinn; three daughters, Mrs. Donald Sechler, Buena Park, Calif., Mrs. Edwin Beck, Grand Forks, N. D., and Mrs. Gary Phelps, Kokomo, Ind.; seven grandchildren; three brothers, Morris Eatherton, Culver City, Calif., Everett Eatherton of Aconda, Mont., and John Eatherton, New Underwood, and two sisters, Mrs. Joseph Beshara, Deadwood, and Mrs. Harold Thomas, Piedmont.
