Charlene Carman
Madison
Charlene "Charlie" Carman passed away at her home in Madison, Mississippi on Friday, August 15, 2008.
Visitation will be 4-6 p.m. today at Wright and Ferguson Funeral Home on Highland Colony Parkway in Ridgeland. Charlie will be interred with her husband and daughter Chan in Columbus, Georgia.
Charlie Carman was the wife of Donald L. Carman, who preceded her in death in 1995 after 50 years of marriage. Charlie and Donald began their life together during World War II when Donald was stationed at Fort Hood. Charlie was a University of Texas coed at the time. Donald was seriously wounded in action in Germany in 1945. Upon his return from overseas, Donald and Charlie were married at the Army hospital in Okmulgee, Oklahoma. After extensive medical treatment and rehabilitation, Donald entered the soft drink business. With Donald, Charlie lived in Wichita, Kansas; Wichita Falls, Texas; Jackson, Mississippi; Amarillo, Texas; and Columbus, Georgia. After Donald's retirement they lived in Lin-day, California and Fairhope, Alabama. When Donald passed away in 1995 Charlie moved back to Mississippi where she enjoyed the company of her family and being "GG" to her great grandson, Ethan and great granddaughter Addison.
Charlie enjoyed her family above all else, especially her five grandchildren and two great grandchildren. She often said her happiest times were when the family was all together for an evening around the fireplace. In addition, Charlie enjoyed playing the slot machines at the casinos in Mississippi and Nevada. Charlie enjoyed watching football with her family and remained a Texas fan throughout her life. She also pulled for the sons of Archie Manning, who she recalled watching play in person when she lived in Jackson many years ago.
Charlie remained a true fan of the South her entire life. She was born Charlene Flewharty in Dallas, Texas in 1924, and lived in Texas until her marriage to Donald. While she had occasion to live in other parts of the country, she was always happiest when living in the deep south. She enjoyed travel and often spoke of the trips she took with her husband, and later with other members of the family. She was known for her gracious and open kindness to all, and above all else for her wonderful sense of humor.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas and Sybil Flewharty; her husband, Donald Carman; her son, David A. Carman; and daughter, Chan Susan Carman.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Nancy Carman, of Billings, Montana and her daughter-in-law, Peggy Carman of Madison, Mississippi; her five grandchildren, Quinn Carman (Crystal) of Wichita, Kansas, Laura Campbell (Drew) of Brandon, Mississippi, Chan Carman, Macy Carman and Drew Margaret Carman of Billings, Montana. In addition she has two wonderful great grand children, Ethan Campbell of Brandon and Addison Carman of Wichita, Kansas.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Hospice of the donor's choice.
