WELL KNOWN OVER COUNTY
Had Lived Here Over Fifty Years and Was Very Successful in Business Dealings
Abraham A. Sprunger, president of the Bank of Berne, and one of the most successful business men of the county, died at his home at Berne last night at eleven o'clock. He was sixty-five years old and had lived in Adams county fifty-two years. He suffered from an attack of lagrippe last spring and never fully recovered, for six weeks having been quite sick with heart trouble and dropsy. Since last Friday his death had been hourly expected. The funeral services will be held Thursday morning at nine o'clock from the Mennonite church at Berne. The Berne Witness today published the following account of Mr. Sprunger's life:
"Abraham A. Sprunger was born February 22, 1841, on Corgemontbreg, Canton Bern, Switzerland. He was the second oldest of a family of eight children, of whom three, the oldest, the late Dr. Peter A. Sprunger, and two younger ones, Katharine and Jonas, together with the parents, preceded him in death. He came to this country with parents and brothers and sisters on July 6, 1854, settling first in Wayne county, Ohio, and removing to this place on October 4th of the same year.
"On November 22, 1862, he was married to Anna Sprunger, daughter of Abraham Sprunger, deceased. (Thus Abraham A. Sprunger, whose father's name was Abraham B. Sprunger, had an Abraham Sprunger as father-in-law.) To this union was born one son, Levi A. Sprunger, after which his mother died on April 4, 1864.
"Mr. Sprunger married again on January 11, 1866, taking for his companion a daughter of John Luginbill, deceased, Maria Moser, then a widow with two children, Levi Moser and Mrs. Sarah Lehman. This union was blessed with three children, Lydia, wife of Burkhart Lehman; Samuel A., and Emma, wife of David F. Lehman. On December 14, 1872, his second wife died, and on May 3, 1873, Mr. Sprunger again entered matrimony by taking to himself a third wife, Magdalena Neuenschwander, daughter of Abraham Neuenschwander, deceased. Of the eight children, which were the offspring of this union, two died, Alina and Ferdinand, and six are still living, Mary, wife of Edwin Gilliom; Albert; Alfred; Amelia, wife of Hiram Baumgartner; Hiram and Ella. All his children are living in Berne or in the vicinity.
"The deceased is survived by two brothers, Fred living north of Berne and Rev. John A., now at Birmingham, O., and three sisters, Mrs. Samuel Lehman and widow Anna Liechty in Berne and Mrs. Christian J. Sprunger at Woodburn, his wife, ten children and twenty-six grandchildren. Two grandchildren died.
