James Clifford Stvenson was born in Omaha, Nebraska in 1891 and came to Klamath county in 1911 where he obtained employment in the hay fields. After working for two years on the Adams Ranch, he bagn working for the California Oregon Power Company and worked for them in the reclamation of lands in the Klamath Basin until 1920. Mr. Stevenson acted as foreman on crews engaged in staking out new river channels and ditches.
In 1920 he settled in Merrill and accepted a position as Peace Office, but retained the position only 9 months. He leased the Hosley Ranch of 180 acres for two years, then took over the Clyde Bradley dairy and operated the dairy of 40 cows, remaining there three years. Back in Merrill in 1926, he and his father-in-law John Ratliff opened a store. During the next few years, in addition to operating the store, the two men cut and hauled wood, operated a power saw in several parts of the basin and leased grain land on Tule Lake. In 1927, they sold their business and Mr. Stevenson took up a 77 1/2 acre homestead in the Tulelake area. In 1938, he purchased the adjoining 78 acre farm. He was also a breeder of Percheron draft horses.
