Last Civil War Vet In South Berkshire
William F. Sackett, last surviving veteran of the Civil war in Southern Berkshire, died suddenly while sitting In a chair in his home in Ashley Falls late yesterday afternoon. He was 90 years of age on his last birthday, October 11.
He was born in Norfolk, Conn., the son of Joseph and Phelena (Root) Sackett and had lived in Ashley Falls for 60 years. During the Civil war he served in Co. H, 91st New York infantry, and saw much active service. He was a member of the G. A. R. He leaves one son, Frederick W. of Collinsville, Conn.; two daughters. Mrs. Annie M. Pinner of Boston and Mrs. Martha Nodine in Florida. It Is expected the funeral will be held Tuesday afternoon it 9 o'clock in Ashley Palls Methodist Episcopal church and will be a military funeral in charge of Southern Berkshire post, American Legion, of Great Barrington. Burial will be in Ashley Falls.
