      CELEBRATE 50 YEARS

Family Honors Couple On Golden Anniversary

SIERRA MADRE, Nov. 7.--Surrounded by flowers and telegrams and as many of their family as were able to be present, Mr. and Mrs. Preston Schwartz celebrated their golden wedding anniversary this week with a family dinner.

While their daughter, Mrs. Laurence Le Fevre, was far away in England driving an ambulance, she cabled them felicitations and sent letters of congratulations.

      Writes To Parents

It almost seemed, she wrote, that she was near home because the ambulance she is driving is named "City of Pasadena."

"It's a dream to drive," she wrote. Mrs. Le Fevre, the former Sarah Preston Schwartz, was in England at the time of the outbreak of the war with her husband, a professor at Eton. They immediately entered war relief work, doing much for the establishment of juvenile evacuees in rural districts. When Mr. Le Fevre was called for active duty, Mrs. Le Fevre went into hospital work and then into the woman's ambulance corp. She is engaged driving "sitting-up patients" to hospitals for treatment.

"I live in a little house attached to the garage with eight others, and we have a good cook and lots of food, she wrote.

      Others Present

Fourteen other members of the Schwartz family were present, including Mr. and Mrs. William Wright (Linda Schwartz) and sons from Deeth, Nev., and Dr. and Mrs. Charlton Schwartz from San Francisco. The families of Tom Schwartz and William H. Schwartz completed the group. Preston Schwartz, Jr., Denver, Colo., and Charles Schwartz of Providence, R. I were unable to attend the celebration.

Mr. and Mrs. Schwartz are both natives of Philadelphia, where they married in 1891. They came to Sierra Madre in 1910 and since then have become prominent members of the community.

Mr. Schwartz has served as city councilman and is a director of the Sierra Madre Savings Bank. Both are active in the Congregational Church.

Honoring the couple, the chimes of the church will ring Sunday at 6 p. m.

      Charlton Royal Schwartz, M.D.

Humboldt Beacon, The (Fortuna, CA) - Wednesday, July 18, 2007

      Feb. 3, 1910

Beloved local physician Charlton Royal Schwartz died peacefully at home on July 9, 2007.

Charlton Royal Schwartz was born Feb. 3, 1910, the eighth of nine children of Preston and Katharine Henszey Schwartz of Germantown, Penn. When Chuck was six months old, the family moved to Sierra Madre, Calif., a happy turn of events for a boy who learned to love body surfing and sailing in Balboa.

He attended UCLA where he completed his pre-medical education before entering Stanford Medical School in 1932. After graduation, he went into medical practice in San Francisco with Dr. Leo Eloesser, a noted Stanford professor of surgery.

In 1940, Chuck married Evelyn Calvert, the love of his life. Their lives were interrupted by World War II, during which Chuck spent three years overseas with the Army's 59th Evacuation Unit, a field surgical hospital. The unit participated in the North African campaign, and the invasions of Sicily, the Italian Peninsula, and southern France. Chuck was present at the liberation of Paris then crossed the Rhine into Germany for the final months of the war. He was assigned to a special unit that entered Dachau Concentration Camp in Bavaria shortly after the 67,000 prisoners were liberated at the end of April 1945.

Following the war, Chuck wanted to start a medical practice in a community where he could raise a family and enjoy hunting and fishing. He found this community in Fortuna, where he and Evelyn moved in December 1945, with their 3-year-old daughter Linda. (Sons Chuck and John were born in 1946 and 1952, respectively.)

Dr. Schwartz -- as he was known by his hundreds and hundreds of local patients -- loved practicing medicine in Fortuna. He made house calls all over Humboldt County, even when, during the winter, it meant crossing the Eel River in a boat, and he delivered many, many babies, both at Scotia Hospital and at Redwood Memorial. He also received a special award for his service as a helicopter spotter during the 1964 flood. In the 23 years during which he was retired, he always enjoyed his visits and encounters with his former patients.

After his retirement in 1984, Chuck had time to hunt and fish, and to tend his annual vegetable garden. He and Evelyn enjoyed the company of their special, life-long friends -- and they traveled, most notably making yearly treks to Phoenix for the San Francisco Giants spring training, and to Oregon to see UCLA basketball compete against Oregon and Oregon State.

Over all the years, even unto the final ones, he would say, "It's been a marvelous life."

After 66 years of marriage, Evelyn died on May 14, 2007. Chuck was also predeceased by his eight siblings.

He is survived his daughter, Linda Russ and husband Jack; sons, Chuck Schwartz and wife Debbie, and John Schwartz and wife Paula; four grandchildren, Jay Russ, Sarah Soloaga and husband Wayne, and Jeremy and Jordan Schwartz; and two great-granddaughters, Alexis and Lindsay Soloaga.

An open house to celebrate the lives of Chuck and Evelyn will be held at the family home in Fortuna on July 28, 1-4 p.m.
