He was united in marriage to Amy Orpha Ridlen on August 31, 1906, Shelby County, Indiana.

To this union, two children were born: Charles Swain and Geneva M. Swain.

Upon the death of Amy, he was united in marriage to Eunice P. Noe March 8, 1915, Hancock County, Indiana. To this union two known children were born, Evelyn M. Swain and Jackie Eugene Swain.

He made his living as a general farmer, farm implement salesman, and an auctioneer. He was a strong Legionnaire and served as the Trustee of the Greenfield Memorial Building.

He shot himself immediately after he shot Charles L Tindall, Attorney, following his divorce hearing in which he lost the custody of his son. He died at Methodist Hospital, Indianapolis, Marion County, Indiana, from a self-inflicted gun shot wound to the stomach. His funeral was held, the following Sunday, at the Greenfield Memorial Building was his final request, the only funeral ever held in that structure. The building was crowded to capacity to hear the funeral sermon by Rev. George Farrow, pastor of the Methodist Protestant Church. The American Legion Post formed a cortege to take his body to the New Palestine Cemetery for interment with full American Legion rites on April 16, 1939.
