SCHOOLEY. Janice Baxter of Salem, Sept. 25, age 81, a former nigh school counselor and domestic violence victim's advocate, died following a long struggle with Alzheimer's disease at Sunrise at Gardner Park in Peabody. Jan's kindness and generosity of spirit extended to many charitable organizations including Help for Abused Women and their Children, Upward Bound and Head Start. She is remembered for her work with adolescents as a high school guidance counselor in Swampscott, Melrose and Lynnfield High Schools. She was a volunteer with Salem Court Mediation. Jan was a longtime member of the Unitarian church of Marblehead and the Salem Thread and Needle Society. Jan graduated from Albion College in 1945, and earned a Master's of Arts in Counseling from the University of Michigan in 1952. She earned a post-retirement Masters of Social Work from Salem State College in 1990. "Mama Jan" is survived by her three daughters, Susan Schooley, M.D. of Detroit, Michigan, Att. Sarah E. Schooley of Amherst, MA, Rachel S. Taddeo of Salem; her six grandchildren, Benjamin S. Wilks, Jacob B. Gerstein, Rebekah M.B. Gerstein, Hannah G. Taddeo, Troy E. Hambric, Odessa M. Hambric; a great- granddaughter Allissa N. Ferrari and her former husband and loyal friend James B. Schooley. As she grew iii, Jan said of Alzheimer's, "I miss the conviviality of it all." Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to visitation Tuesday from 3 to 4 PM in the Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal St., (corner of Rt 114, Exit 25A from Rt. 128), SALEM to be followed by Funeral Services at 4:00 PM in the Funeral Home. Burial will be private. Those who wish may make memorial contributions to the Alzheimer's Foundation, 36 Cameron St., Cambridge, MA 02140.
