William S. Sackett, Descendant of Dr. Hoge,
Named "Eldest Elder" in Presbyterian Church
By COLLEE KOCHER
(Dispatch Church Editor)
WILLIAM S. (for Starrett) SACKETT, 99, is back in the news.
This time because he is one of the eldest elders, in the length of service, in the Presbyterian Church. Recognition for his service to the church was given him this week in his denomination's publication, Presbyterian Life.
Previously, Mr. Sackett, who lives at 1159 E. Broad St. has been the subject of numerous feature stories. A well-known figure about Columbus. Mr. Sackett worked for more years than he can recall at the Huntington National Bank.
According to the records, Mr. Sackett joined Huntington National Bank in May, 1868, as their
first bookkeeper and worked continuously for 71 years, retiring Jan. 1, 1942.
It is thought that his period of service at the bank establishes a mark of longevity. And his length of service to his church is believed to be unequaled, at least in this part of the country.
When Mr. Sackett began his 70th year in the employment of the bank, he told newspaper reporters that his whole life had consisted of his job and his church.
Mr. Sackett is a member or Northminster Presbyterian Church, King and Forsythe Avs. He was made an elder in 1872 by Hoge Chapel of which Northminster is an outgrowth.
Mr. Sackett never married. Except for his hours on the job, he devoted all his time to the church. Part of his achievement was the establishment in 1870 of Hoge Chapel. The church was named for his maternal grandfather, Dr. James Hoge, who came to Ohio from Virginia in 1805 as a Presbyterian missionary and founded the first church in Franklinton.
Mr. Sackett plunged into Hoge Chapel?s activities, serving as a member of the board of trustees and superintendent of the Sunday School. The congregation grew. later merged with several other churches and finally became the present-day Northminster Church near the Ohio State University campus.
The Northminster congregation elected Mr. Sackett to the Board of Sessions on the very day the new church went into being, Dec. 28. 1905. He has served Northminster in many capacities. These include clerk of sessions, secretary, and benevolent treasurer. He also taught the Hoge Bible Class. He served as a ruling elder for 50 years, and in 1927 was given the honorary title of Life Elder.
When Mr. Sackett retired, all his attention was put on his church. For some time he attended church every Sunday, rain or shine, and was present for special activities. However, recent months have found him unable to get out.
Mr. Sackett has no special rule for living except the Golden Rule. "The world's greatest need is religion," he often remarks. ?When people get right, the world will get right."
Mr. Sackett has always done more than talk about his religion. He uses it in his daily life, doing only things which he thinks are Christian. He says he has never used "tobacco, alcohol or strong language."
Mr. Sackett now spends much of his time in his old brown rocking chair at the front window in his room watching the fast-moving activities on E. Broad St.
And although he usually sees only Mr. and Mrs. Edward N. Webb with whom he resides, he insists on being neat. He diligently brushes and combs his rather ample white hair, smooths (sic) and brushes his clothing. If he goes for a ride, he enjoys wearing a "nice hat." Unannounced reporters caught him wearing matching tie and handkerchief.
The house in which he lives is large and has huge high ceilings. But Mr. Sackett prefers that. He says he likes residing in "commodious and ample dwellings And he recalled that he always had. He mentioned some of his other homes: A large house at the northwest corner of 15th and Indianola Avs, several dwellings on 14th Av, on N. High St opposite Ohio State University, and his 13-room homestead at 30 Kenyon Brook Dr. south of Worthington.
With the same accuracy, Mr. Sackett also recalled long-ago experiences and old-time friends. He spoke of PeIatiah Webster Huntington, founder of the Huntington Bank; Governor Dennison, who resided nearly opposite from where he now lives, and Mr. Deshler, who resided at the northwest corner of E. Broad and 3rd Sts.
