Daughter of Charles J Judd (1807-1863) and Jane Ann Mosley (1813-1852) ___ Obituary from The Western New Yorker, Thursday, 26 Feb 1880: Death of Mrs. Merrill __ Mrs. Flora Merrill, wife of W H Merrill -- formerly of this place, and for many years the editor of the New Yorker -- died at her residence in Boston, on the 18th inst., at the age of 38 years. She was the daughter of Charles J Judd, and was born in Warsaw, where she spent the most of her life. In the summer of 1875 Mr. Merrill removed to Boston, to become the editor of the Golden Rule, and has since resided there. __ It is impossible to convey in fitting words the estimation in which she was held here. The community in which she so long made her home know best of all others the excellent qualities of heart and of mind which she possessed. A nature that was all kindliness -- a strength of intellect that knew when to assert itself and when to respose -- a womanly grace that was an unfailing charm and attraction, all these and more, were hers. Not many years since, she spent a few months in California to recruit her health, and while there wrote a short series of letters which were published in the Western New Yorker. Those who recall them have not forgotten the exceeding gracefulness and the picturesque beauty with which she related her experiences of travel and adventure. The scenes she looked at were photographed, not described, in her felicitous way. __ Her last sickness was of short duration. She was stricken with apoplexy in the early part of January last, and never rallied from the shock, and did not fully recover her speech, although conscious of all that was passing around her until near the end. Her remains were brought to this place for burial and simple and appropriate funeral services were held at the residence of Hon. Wm. Bristol, on Buffalo street. Rich and rare flowers, the gifts of her Boston friends, were forwarded here and graced the casket in which she lay at rest. She leaves two sons, one of whom, with Mr. Merrill, accompanied the remains from Boston. (Obit contributed by Airrow)
