4 William Lawrence, the fifth son of the said John
Lawrence and Patience Sacket, was for many years a
magistrate of Queens County, and filled the station with usefulness. On the capture of Long Island in 1776, part of his house at Newton [Newtown] was the headquarters of the British General Robertson, and himself and family were subjected to many of the exactions and vexations which others, who had rebel predelections, experienced from the invaders. He died in his sixty-fifth year ; he was twice married, first, Ann Brinckerhoff, and by her had issue :
