L. A. RUSSELL, ILL MONTHS, IS DEAD
Eventful Career of Leading Attorney Closes at Sixty-Five.
A Self-Made Man, He Rose From Newsboy to Success.
Lemuel A. Russell, twice Democratic nominee for congress, and one of the leaders of the bar for many years in Cleveland, died last, night at his home, 2340 E. 42d-st., following a long 1llness at the age of sixty-five.
Corporation lawyer. mine operator, military officer during the war and reconstruction period, school teacher--the dead man's sixty-five years spanned a life or intense and varied activity. The last thirty-five years he spent continuously in Cleveland as one of the leading lawyers of the city.
Mr. Russell's career was self-made from the beginning. He worked his way through grade school and high school and while pursuing private legal studies under former Judge R. F. Paine, by carrying papers. After being admitted to the bar he supported himself by varied activities while waiting to practice.
Born in Westfield, Medina county Sept. 11. 1842, Mr. Russell came to Cleveland with his father, Rev. William Russell, at tho age of eleven. He attended Rockwell school and Central high. He was valedictorian of his class at Central.
School friends of Mr. Russell tell how he was twice dismissed from school for breaking the rules and owning u to it afterward. The second time he was before the principal and denounced the system of punishment of pupils for telling the truth, and carried his point. He was reinstated and his class records were a matter of pride to his teachers.
Unable to afford to wait for clients after admission to tho bar, at the age of twenty-one, Mr. Russell took a position as district school teacher in Rockport, leaving there to take a place in the quartermaster's department of the army. His executive ability won quick recognition, and he was advanced before the end· of the war to chief clerk of the railroad bureau division of tho Mississippi. After the war he worked at executive work with several big contracting firms, practices law a short time in Nashville, Tennessee, then leased a mine and an oil field in Kentucky. Every year brought greater experience and self-condolence.
In 1872 Mr. Russell returned to Cleveland where joined the firm of Otis & ·Adams, corporation attorneys. His advance was rapid. Later he formed a partnership with William L. Rice in tho Society for Savings building. Until last may, when i11 health forced retirement, he was in active practice. He was twice nominated for congress from the twenty·first district.
Mr. Russell was married in 1875 to Miss Estella Rawson of Fremont. His wife and three children, Eugene, Faith and Miriam Russell, survive him. Mr. Russell was converted to Catholicism last October, and the funeral will be conducted under Catholic auspices.
