Mrs. Bean, Pioneer Piano Teacher, Succumbs at 93

A pioneer Wyoming musician who inspired many to follow musical careers, Mrs. Grace Gilpin Bean, died at the Pioneer Home in Thermopolis Wednesday at the age of 93. Funeral services will be conducted at the Horstman-Gay chapel in Casper Monday at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Charles S. Bream, Lutheran minister, officiating. Interment will be in Highland cemetery.

She was born Nov. 13, 1866 in Winterset, la., and studied music in Iowa and later at the American Conservatory in Chicago under Alan Spencer. In 1894 she married Elihu Bean in Winterset. They moved to Wyoming in 1907 and ranched in the vicinity of Shoshoni, where Mrs. Bean taught music in the Shoshoni schools and also gave private lessons.

Mrs. Bean served in the first World War in France with the YMCA, directing soldier talent shows for the armed forces.

Returning to Wyoming, she taught music and directed many high school operettas in Shoshoni and Hudson. Mr. Bean died in 1931.

Later Mrs. Bean moved to Casper and taught piano, voice and musical appreciation. For many years she directed the choir at the Grace Lutheran church. She continued to teach until 1958, when she was 92. She still had a class in music appreciation when she moved to Basin to make her home with a daughter, Mrs. Mary Sackctt.

One of her many students in Casper had this to say:

"She was beloved by her many pupils and was an inspiration to them. Her true humility was a reflection of her greatness and earnestness to fully give to all who studied under her. Her sincere devotion to her pupils and friends, and her remarkable ability to create an interest in others, inspired many to become proficient musicians.

"Her journey in life was not only to live, but to teach and create. Her Sunday musicales were a tradition in Casper, where a constant flow of pupils and friends was always at her studio, which she maintained for many years at IS04 South Park. She will be remembered as a devoted and diligent music teacher who taught and lived to the fullest measure of capacity."

Mrs. Bean was a member of Chapter G, PEO, when several years ago she was honored at a luncheon. .

Survivors include a daughter, Mary, of Basin; a grandson, Robert M. Sackett of Riverton, a granddaughter, Mrs. A. F. Denes of Park Ridge, I11., four great grandchildren, Karen and Susan Sackett, Robert and Linda Denes, a niece, Mrs. S. M. Shively of Casper and relatives in New York and California.
