      MRS PARKS NEARCENTURY MARK.

The oldest person in the western part of Hampden county, and a descendant of two of the oldest families in that section of the state, Mrs Lavinia Parks of Russell, celebrated her 98th birthday on June 6.

She is remarkably well preserved. and has braided half a dozen rugs during the past year. Her memory is excellent and her voice has the force and expression commonly heard only from a woman in middle life.

She was born in Blandford, her father being Warren Parks, one of a family which figured prominently in the history of the region, before and during the revolution, one of its members being Gen Warham Parks of Westfield, of whom Mrs Parks is a distant connection. In the maternal line she was descended from the Sackett family, her ancestor, John Sackett, having been one of the early settlers of 'Westfield.

Mrs Parks was one of a family of four. The others are dead, and, although she has had two children, her only living descendant is a granddaughter, Miss Lina Culver, a kindergarten teacher of Sandy Hill, N Y.

She was first married to Horace Culver of Blandford, who died in 1845. A few years later she moved to Russell, with her two children William and Lina. In 1850 she was married to Lyman Parks, who died about 25 years ago.

For many years she lived with a stepson, Robert Parks, in Westfield. She lives now with friends in Russell and enjoys life well for a woman of her years, trolley riding being her favorite recreation.
