HENRY 'HANK' RUSSELL WARREN JR. BELVIDERE - Henry Russell Warren Jr., better known as "Hank," passed away July 18, 2010. He was born March 7, 1918, in Belvidere to Henry Russell and Ardie Woods Warren. Hank was a member of the first graduating class of Keith Country Day School, later attending Belvidere High School, where he excelled in track and football. He ran a 9.8-second 100-yard dash in soft cinders, and his relay team set the conference record. Hank later attended Beloit College in Wisconsin where he studied anthropology, graduating in 1940. There he continued his pursuit of athletics in football and track, also becoming a member of Beta Theta Pi Fraternity. Hank later received a degree in the Advanced Management Program at Harvard Business School. An honorably discharged veteran, he served his country in the U.S. Marine Corps in Guadalcanal during World War II, attaining the rank of master sergeant. He was a communications specialist. Upon military discharge, Hank returned to Kenne-Belvidere Canning Co. as vice president of farming operations where he had worked since age 13. In 1948 he joined Stokely-Van Camp as east central divisional sales manager. In 1954 he left Stokely to become the assistant to the marketing vice president at Lever Bros., later returning to Stokely to become general sales manager, and finally director and vice president of marketing. In this capacity Hank was responsible for the purchase and introduction of Gatorade as a product. As an entrepreneur, he owned numerous business ventures including French Monk Winery. On Dec. 28, 1940, he was united in marriage to Barbara Adell Funderburg during their Christmas break from college. Their union was blessed with four children. Hank and Barbara were avid sports enthusiasts, which translated to their support of many programs. He was chairman of the board of the Indianapolis Indians during the creation of the 'new' Victory Field. Further, he and his wife were avid Indiana University supporters. They were long-standing Hoosier Hundred and Indiana University Foundation members, where they assisted with the funding of the football program. Hank has been recognized in The World Who's Who of Finance and Industry (1970/71) and the World Who's Who of Commerce & Industry (1967/68). He was awarded The Council of The Sagamores of the Wabash by Gov. Harold Hanley in 1960, Honorary Citizen of Tennessee by Gov. Frank G. Clement in 1965, and commissioned a Kentucky Colonel by Gov. Louie B. Nunn in 1971. He also received personal correspondences from then-Vice President Hubert Humphrey regarding their meetings about business matters in the United States. His numerous memberships include Woodstock Country Club, Traders Point Hunt Club, University Club, Indianapolis Athletic Club, Columbia Club, Newcomen Society of North America, Beta Theta Pi Fraternity, the American Legion and the American Business Club. Survived by son, Hugh K. "Brick" Warren; daughters, Sandra Bishop Warren, Barbara K. "Barrie" Russell and Russell J. "Rusty" Warren; seven grandchildren; and 11 great-grand-children. Family and friends will gather from 3 to 6 p.m. Thursday, July 22, in Leppert Mortuary, Nora Chapel, 740 E. 86th St., Indianapolis, IN 46240. Funeral service at 3 p.m. Friday July 23, in First Presbyterian Church, Belvidere, with family and friends gathering from 2 p.m. to time of service. Interment in Belvidere Cemetery.

Barbara Adell Funderburg Warren was born in Belvidere, Illinois on August 29, 1917 to Hugh K and Alice Isles Funderburg. A graduate of Belvidere High School, she was a member of the Girls Athletic Association, girls basketball team and received first place in the Illinois State Championship for flute performances. She was tutored in her musical pursuits by Clarence Gates who played in the band led by the March King John Philip Sousa.
Barbara furthered her education by attending Smith College for two years where she was a member of the swim team. She transferred to Stanford University, receiving her Bachelors Degree in Education in 1939. While at Stanford she was a member in Alpha Omicron Pi sorority and was the Editor-in-chief of the Stanford yearbook during her senior year. A high achiever, Barbara received a Masters Degree in Education from the University of Wisconsin and took doctoral level classes.
Barbara was a gifted athlete and her accomplishments were numerous. As a youth she had ridden and shown horses receiving several blue ribbons in the Northern Illinois circuit. She had skippered a c boat, winning competitions in Lake Delevan, Wisconsin. As an adult, Barbara was a member of the Traders Point Hunt Club, Woodstock Club, tennis player and bowler as well as hit a hole-in-one at a golf tournament hosted at Highland Country Club. Barbara also loved being a sports spectator, supporting her beloved Indianapolis Indians and all Indiana University teams.
In her junior year in high school she met the love of her life, Henry Russell Warren, Jr. The couple married on December 28, 1940, later moving to Indianapolis, Indiana in 1947.
As a resident of Indianapolis, Barbara pursued many charitable and personal interest as well as raising four children. Barbara was a Lassie with the Salvation Army and a member of Woodstock Club and Christamore House Guild. She was a Girl Scout troop leader, avid bridge player, gardener and knitter. Barbara would make needlepoint rugs for her home sew and design dresses for her daughters and make needlepoint Christmas stockings for family and friends.
Mrs. Barbara Adell Funderburg Warren passed away on December 31, 2006 in Indianapolis, Indiana. Baba, as her family knew her is preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, John Kenneth and R. Robert Funderburg. She is survived by her husband of sixty seven years. Henry Russell Warren, Jr.; children, Sandra Bishop Warren, Barrie K. Russell, Hugh K. (Brick) Warren and Russell J. Warren. She has seven grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
