Paying tribute to a Civil War veteran
      BY ERIC HRIN (Staff Writer)
      Published: September 30, 2012

LITCHFIELD TWP. - Four Civil War reenactors walked over the leaf-littered ground of a cool, quiet woods Saturday in Litchfield Township.

They were not accompanying an army, but rather a group of people that included descendants of a Civil War veteran, Private Horace O. Sackett.

On this autumn day, the group had come to Sackett's burial plot in the woods, located on private ground near Hill Road.

They were there to rededicate Sackett's grave, which now bears a new gravestone from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. At Saturday's ceremony, it lay under red, white and blue bunting, prior to being unveiled for the occasion. Time had taken its toll on the old gravestone, which became unreadable after 148 years.

"We would like to thank all of his descendants present," said one of the reenactors, Kurt Lafy, camp commander of the Sons of Union Veterans, Private Silas Gore Camp No. 141 and first lieutenant with Company A of the 141st Pennsylvania Volunteers. He told everyone that they were doing a "great honor" to Sackett by taking part in the rededication. Lafy said that he and the other reenactors felt a "great privilege" to share the experience with them.

The Gore Camp undertook the replacement of the gravestone while the 141st Pennsylvania Volunteers served as the Honor Guard for the ceremony.

Gary Sackett of Waverly, N.Y., who is Horace Sackett's great-great grandson, recalled how one man, Bill Seddon, Jr., came to his workplace, C.C. Allis in January 2010 near Herrickville, asking for an estimate on a garage. Eventually, the conversation turned to the Civil War veteran.

"I told him Horace was supposed to be buried here, and he got curious and went to look for it," he said.

Gary Sackett, who now has the old gravestone at his house with plans of restoring it, recalled how Seddon discovered the marker.

"He put his foot on it to rest, he pushed the leaves away, and there was the headstone," he said. Gary Sackett said he had been looking for the old gravestone for five years. He noted that Seddon had some information gleaned from a local property owner, which helped him find the grave. Gary Sackett said Seddon's information was better than what he had.

"He actually called me when he had found it."

One of the reenactors, Private Steve Hall, helped Gary Sackett apply to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs for the new marble gravestone. Lafy noted that it's debossed so the letters stand out, which he said was the original style for gravestones in the Civil War.

As part of the rededication, Horace Sackett's great-great-great grandson, Jerrell Sackett, 6, put a flower on the new headstone. Horace Sackett's great-great-great-great grandsons, Dalton and Derek Sackett, and Martin Sackett, Horace Sackett's great-great-great grandson, lifted the bunting off to unveil the new gravestone.

Ironically, Dalton wore a gray hooded sweatshirt and Derek a blue one, inadvertently representing the colors of both sides in the war. They said their choice of clothes was merely a coincidence.

Lafy shared details about the life of Horace Sackett, who was «b»born in July 1820 and died on April 25, 1864«/b». He was a private in Co. L of the 12th Cavalry, also known as the 113th Regiment. «b»Enlisted and mustered on Dec. 29, 1863 in Waterford, Pa«/b». by a Lt. Campbell, «b»Horace Sackett died in Bradford County while on furlough visiting relatives«/b». His whole company, which was in Martinsburg, Va. at the time, was on furlough. Lafy noted that they "weren't doing much," due to the war going idle in the winter.

While in Bradford County on furlough, Horace Sackett became sick and died. Lafy noted that while Horace Sackett wasn't in a battle and his service was short, he was still a Civil War veteran and deserving of honors.

Lafy unveiled some further details about «b»Horace Sackett«/b»: he «b»was born in Chester Village, Mass«/b».; was 5 feet 6 1/2 inches tall; had blue eyes; and had light hair and a light complexion. Lafy noted that «b»official records show that Horace Sackett was 39 years old, when he enlisted«/b». Lafy wasn't sure why his gravestone conflicted with this information. According to the dates on the gravestone, Horace Sackett was 44 years old when he died - not even a year after he enlisted.

Gary Sackett said that «b»Horace Sackett had four children«/b», and was married to his «b»wife, Elvira«/b». The children's names were «b»John, Spencer, Ruth, and Elvira.«/b»

Gary Sackett invites any Scouts who want to help restore the family cemetery where Horace Sackett is buried to call him at (607) 565-9974.

He said there are at least two other graves there.

Also as part of the rededication, Phil Herman, a member of the Sons of Union Veterans, read a poem, "When the Boys in Blue are Gone."

Other members of the 141st taking part in the rededication were Cpl. Bud Fiske and Private Jon Fiske.

Lafy, when asked, imagined what Horace Sackett would have thought of the rededication.

      "I would hope he's smiling."
