    • Peter Button Biography, Posted on Ancestry.com 02 Aug 2020 by Stacy Niedzwiecki

Peter Button, with his parents and their 5 children, came to Hebron, N.Y., from Ellington, Conn., 1790 - 95. He taught the first public school in Hebron; U . P. Church organized 1804 , of which he was a member; farmer and gatekeeper on the Northern Pike. He lived on the hill south of the old “ Judge Porter place "and was paid twenty dollars per month for services as gatekeeper; also worked at tailoring, cutting and making garments. Previously he had lived in Dr .Ingersoll's house, now (1928 ) standing, in which one or more of his children were born. Harriet (Button) Wilson, mother of John Quincy Wilson, born here May 9, 1802.

Peters Button was clerk and book keeper for DeLong, owner and builder of the store now occupied by O. B. Hadaway, son of Edward. Peter leaving his daughter Mary to attend the tollgate, the superintendent happened along, inquiring for Peter; was told he was working down in the field. He told Peter this was no way to look after his job; after some words had passed, Peter told him his daughter was on the job. The superintendent left, driving his horseat break -neck speed; tried to drive through the toll gate without paying, but Mary Button was tending that gate. As the horse neared, she slammed it shut; he did not pass; and admitted that Mary was fully capable of looking after the gate .

Peter and his wife attended the public execution of a man by the name of Qua, just on the hill north from Salem (now “ Gallows Hill").The first church at East Hebron stood near the home of Frank Nelson, son of Elbert; once a part of the “ Old Root Tavern” ; this church was 90 ft. long with a gallery on three sides; over the pulpit was a large sounding board; pews were of the box stall style, with doors ; the source of heating was a broad fireplace which would hold in its embrace a half cord of wood and from this the coals supplied the warming foot stones. The present church was erected in 1846 ; the first installed preacher was Walter Fullerton, and what now would be a slight misdemeanor would then be taken as a serious charge and brough tup for reprimand.

Peter 's second wife was Rhoda Gunn of R . I. stock , and a granddaughter of Gen . Shepard. She had six sisters and one brother, viz : Dolly, Betsey, Lydia, Ann , Grace, Julia , and Chester. Dolly married a Nisbet.
