DAWN E. BURKE

Dawn E. Burke, 77, died, Tuesday, April 22, 2008 at Mercy Hospice in Johnston. Dawn was born on October 31, 1930 in Titonka, IA.
Dawn graduated from Titonka High School and completed courses at Simpson College. She then went on to own her own ceramic studio and restaurant.
She is survived by daughters, Shelley (Wes) Borlin of Ankeny, IA and Susan (Jon) Kirkhart of Johnston, IA; son, Jeffrey Nelson of Burlington, WI; grandchildren, Joy (Matt) Buckingham, Wendy Borlin, Nichole and Nicholas Kirkhart, and Jeffrey and Elizabeth Nelson; three great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by sisters, Joyce Ramirez and Janice Ward, and daughter, Laurie Hood.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m., Friday, April 25, 2008 at Hamilton's near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Ave., Des Moines. Family will visit with friends from 12 p.m. until service time on Friday at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions can be made to Mercy Hospice or the Animal Rescue League.

Barry K. Hood, 46, of the 1200 block of Edgemont Street died of a hoart ailment Mon day at Mercy Hospital Medical Center. Services will be at noon Friday at Southtown Funeral Home. Cremation will follow services.
Mr. Hood was born in Indianola and had lived there before moving to Des Moines four years ago. He was a retired juvenile social worker.
He is survived by his wife, Laurie Nelson-Hood; two daughters, Joy Buckingham of Otley and Jenna Brandle of Des Moines; his mother, Frances Hood of Indianola; two sisters, Kay Barfels of Dubuque and Judy Gilmore of Riverside, Calif.; and two brothers, Larry of Valencia, Pa., and Jerry of Lees Summit, Mo.
Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made for the purchase of animal and wildlife books at the Des Moines Public Library.

Laurie Nelson-Hood, 48, of the 2100 block of East Virginia Avenue died of a heart ailment Saturday at Mercy Medical Center. Services will be at noon Wednesday at Southtown Funeral Home Chapel. Cremation will follow services.
Mrs. Nelson-Hood was born in Des Moines and had lived In the area for all of her life. She had worked as a fund-raiser for nonprofit organizations and was the former business manager for the Des Moines Metro Opera. She was a watercolor artist with work currently on display In Des Moines and Washington, D.C.
She is survived by a daughter, Joy Ann Buckingham of Otley; her mother, Dawn Burke of Des Moines; two sisters, Shelley Borlin of Ankeny and Susan Kirkhart of Johnston; a brother, Jeffrey Nelson of Burlington, Wis.; and a grandchild. She was preceded in death by her husband, Barry.
