Susan Sacket Haigh Carver
March 26, 1936 - November 29, 2016
Sue died peacefully in her sleep on November 29, 2016 after enduring an arduous battle with Alzheimer's disease since 2011. Her loving family was by her side at the time of her passing. She was 80 years old.
Born in New York City to Frances DeValen Haigh & Thomas D. Haigh and was raised in Darien, CT. She attended New Canaan Country School through 9th grade, transferred to the Ethyl Walker Boarding School, then graduated from Smith College in 1958. Sue spent her junior year abroad at the University of Geneva in Switzerland, the highlight of her educational endeavors!
Upon graduation, Sue moved to San Francisco and was employed by The Emporium Department Store until her marriage to John Carver on August 29, 1959 in Darien. Sue & John were blessed with 3 children, 8 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild. They were married for 57 years.
Aside from raising her 3 children, Susie became an avid gardener. In fact, her Hillsborough garden was selected by the Smithsonian Museum to be placed in their national archives. Sue also enjoyed tennis, skiing, jumping at the Ox Ridge Club in Connecticut and trail riding in numerous western states. In addition, she assiduously studied cooking and became an outstanding classic cook.
Sue was a member of the Hillsborough Garden Club, The Burlingame Club, Hillsborough Racquet Club, Crippled Children's Society and various reading clubs. She loved to read and devoured books until her eyesight began to fail in 2013.
Survived by her husband John; children: Thomas Carver (Cindy), Amy Palmer Gilbert (Steve) & Jonathan Carver (Janine); grandchildren: Caleb, Danika, Jessica, Matt, Christian, Ian, Liam & Charlie; and great-grandchild Carter.
Private services were held. Should you wish to honor her memory, the family suggests contributions be made to the Hillsborough Garden Club, PO Box 209, Burlingame, CA 94011 or the New Canaan Country School (where a new meeting/dining building is currently being constructed in her name) 635 Frogtown Rd., New Canaan, CT 06840.
