Charlotte C. Buckley, a generous supporter and contributor to numerous local organizations and causes, died Saturday at her home in Syracuse. She was 94 years old.
The Everson Museum of Art, Syracuse Symphony Orchestra, Syracuse Rescue Mission, Oakwood Cemetery, Community Foundation, Clarkson University and Habitat For Humanity, were among Mrs. Buckley's interests, family members said today.
"She was a lovely lady both physically and spiritually," said her daughter, Virginia Yeager. "She had a compassion for others that drew people to her. She was a true gentle woman."
Mrs. Buckley was born in Owego, the daughter of Harriet and Judge H. Austin Clark. She was educated at Miss Beard's School in Orange, N.J., and the Froebel League in New York City, a pre-school teacher preparation school.
In 1920, she married Howard Chester Will , president of Will and Baumer Candle Co., and lived in Syracuse since that time.
Mr. Will died in 1962. Six years later she married Kenneth P. Buckley, president of Buckley Petroleum Co., who died in 1987.
When she was in her 50s, after raising her children, Mrs. Buckley turned to the study of art. She took classes at University College with Horace Clark, working mainly in caseins, a milk-based paint. Mrs. Buckley became so proficient that her work - primarily abstract - was exhibited at Associated Artists locally and throughout the state.
In 1968, she had a three-woman show with Betty Rudolph and Violet DeFuria, at Associated Artists.
"Her paintings were joyous. People were amazed," Yeager said. "They thought they would be gentle little pastels. Instead, they were a vibrant concept of abstracts in magentas, blues and greens. They were really quite powerful."
Mrs. Buckley served on the board of Associated Artists and was active with the Members' Council of the Everson Museum of Art.
She was a member of Park Central Presbyterian Church, where she taught religious classes for children, and was a member of its Circle H.
Mrs. Buckley was a Mayflower descendant through Stephen Hopkins who settled in Plymouth and later Barnstable, Mass. She was a member of the Mayflower Society.
She was also a member of the Corinthian Club, Monday Club and a life member and former board member of the Boys Club Auxiliary.
Mrs. Buckley's daughter, Elizabeth Joyce Will Burdick, died in 1965. Her son, Howard Clark Will , died in 1969.
Surviving are two daughters, Virginia W. Yeager and Carol W. Porter, both of Fayetteville; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Memorial services are at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Park Central Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Scott G. Loomer and Monsignor Charles H. Eckermann will officiate. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery, Syracuse.
The family will greet friends in the church parlor after services.
Contributions may be made to Park Central Presbyterian Church Memorial Fund or a charity of one's choice.
Fairchild & Meech Syracuse Chapel has arrangements.
