WILSIE, ROGER M.
Title: PASSAGES DEATH AND FUNERAL NOTICES
San Diego Union-Tribune, The (CA) - Sunday, December 14, 2008
WILSIE, ROGER M. July 14, 1921 to Nov. 30, 2008
Roger M. Wilsie passed away peacefully at home Thanksgiving weekend, surrounded by his loving children. Born and raised in San Diego, he graduated from San Diego High School and at age 17 joined the Navy. In 1941, while stationed in Hawaii aboard the USS Whitney (AD-4), Roger survived the infamous attack on Pearl Harbor and was instrumental in saving the lives of many of his fellow sailors. At the end of the war, he resumed his education at Occidental College and UCLA. As a young lieutenant on shore leave in Honolulu, he met the love of his life, Marjorie Somers. Married for 53 years until her death in 2007, they raised four children on Navy bases in California, Rhode Island, and Georgia, ultimately returning to San Diego. Rising to the rank of Lt. Commander, Roger retired from the Navy in 1968, after serving his country for 27 years. The family settled in Kensington, attending school and church at St. Didacus where Roger served on the PTG Board, the Parish Council and as a Eucharistic Minister. His volunteer activities in the parish spanned over 30 years, long after his children had left the school. After the Navy, Roger worked for the Stanwick Corp. and eventually Nasland Engineering, where he retired in 1987. Roger was in his 50's when he coached his only son's little league team. He also coached football and served as a scout master. He took the family out for sailing lessons, and taught everyone how to hit a golf ball. He was a generous and loving father, a great teacher, and a kind and loving soul. In his retirement years, Roger became an avid golfer, buying a little car to drive to the courses that he called his "golf cart," but the grandkids called the "Bumpba-mobile." He was active in the Pearl Harbor Survivors Association and hosted the USS Whitney Survivors Association reunion in San Diego in 2001. On a trip to Pearl Harbor for his 80th birthday, with the entire 18 member Wilsie family by his side, Roger was honored by the Rear Admiral of the Pacific Fleet for his service in the Navy. When Alzheimer's disease took most of his memory, that was one day he always remembered. Roger is survived by his children, Carol Wood, her husband David and their children Emily and Andy; Cassie Wilsie and her fiancé Taylor Wiley; Janet Hubka, her husband Mark and their children Josh, Thomas, Kelsea and Marin; and Richard Wilsie, his wife Ruth and their children Jake and Ian. "Bumpa" will be dearly missed by all of his family and friends. A Celebration of Life Mass will be held at St. Didacus Church in San Diego on Friday, December 19, 2008, at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Alzheimer's Association or the Assistance League of San Diego.
