      Albert Alvah "Al" Haviland
      Birth: Jan. 9, 1922

      Death: Oct. 15, 2013
      Stamford

Al (Albert) was born at Aunt Maggie's (Margaret Christina (Knapp) Petzolt) and Uncle George's (George Petzolt) on January 9, 1922 and was baptised on May 28, 1922 at St. Luke's. The family was living on 17 Cedar Street, Stamford, CT at the time. Al's godparents were his Uncle Orv and Aunt Mattie (Orville and Mattie Haviland).
When Al was a boy he was in the Boy Scouts, Troop 11 of North Stamford (by the Church Hall on the hill). He made First Class and had some merit badges. Leon Surabie and his younger brother were also in the troop. Harry McKean was the scoutmaster. Harry' father was Joe McKean who was a good friend of Al's Dad (Harold H. Haviland). Harold and Joe (and families) use to get together to play cards and go on trips. Joe was the reservoir keeper for the North Stamford reservoir.

Al remembered his parents having a grape arbor (one story frame structure covered with mesh) in the backyard. His father Harold made wine every year and filled a few 50-gallon barrels. Al said the arbor was a nice place to go on a hot summer day to stay cool. They also raised turkeys and ducks in the yard. There was a four foot diameter duck pond in the back. Al's cousins (the Freers) lived across the street, the Mallorys (cousins) lived up the hill, and the Averys (cousins) lived next door.
Al married Betty (Elizabeth Jean Burns) at St. Clement's Church in Stamford, Connecticut on 30 July 1949. Betty and Al bought a newly constructed house on Barmore Drive, Stamford in 1949. In 1959 they moved to 20 Bridle Path Road, Stamford. Both Betty and Al were active in scouts with their three children. They bought a partially finished cabin in Hampton, New York as a summer place in 1965. After retiring in 1977, Betty and Al lived in New York and Florida before settling in Manchester Center, Vermont. Their last house was in Manchester Center, Vermont (a condominium). After Betty's passing, Al moved back to Stamford, Connecticut.
