BUSH--Prof. George Gary Bush, Ph.D., died at his residence in Malden, Mass., early Saturday morning, October 15. Prof. Bush had been ill the past five years with Bright's disease. He had spent three summers at Maplewood, and was well-known there. His winters were passed in Bellview, Fla., where he had a large orange grove.
George Gary Bush was born in the town of Turin, northern New York, March 19, 1843. He was prepared for college at Cazenovia seminary, N.Y., and was graduated from the Wesleyan university at Middletown, Ct., in 1866. For the succeeding eight years he was engaged in teaching, either as principal or superintendent of schools and later as professor of Latin and Greek in the seminary at Montpelier, Vt. His work was every where very successful, and in Vermont he soon ranked with the best classical teachers in the state.
Resigning his chair in the summer of 1874, he spent the next four years in Europe in the study of languages, history, and archeology. Upon his return to America in 1875, two universities invited him to a place in their faculties, but his health had become so seriously impaired that he was obliged to decline. In 1880 he filled for a time a vacancy in the Latin chair at Middlebury college, but with that exception he did not again engage in teaching. Until his health no longer permitted, he devoted much time to writing of newspaper and magazine articles, and to the preparation of monographs upon the history of education in this country and in Germany. Among the latter that have been published are The First German Universities, The First Common Schools of New England, Harvard: The First American University, The History of Education in Florida, and The History of Higher Education in Massachusetts. He also prepared histories of education in New Hampshire and Vermont, which are to be published, as were those of Florida and Massachusetts by the United States bureau of education.
In 1878, he received the degree of doctor of philosophy and was elected a member of the Phi Beta Kappa society and in 1885 of the American Historical association which is comprised of the historical scholars of America. He was a life-long Methodist being converted while a student at Cazanovia seminary. Too much cannot be said in praise of his pure and upright life. He was a cultured Christian gentleman whom to know and admire, and he will be sadly missed by a large circle of friends and relatives. He was twice married, his first wife being Fannie D. Strong of Turin, N.Y., who died in 1872. He leaves a widow formerly Ellen F. Nightingale of Quincy, Mass., and aged mother, Mrs. O.B. Lee, three sisters and two brothers. It will be remembered by some that last April, a little sketch of Mrs. Lee was published in this paper because of her having reached her ninetieth birthday. This was written by Prof. Bush, who from a lad had always been a loyal, dutiful son. He left his home-life on the farm, at the age of fifteen to enter seminary. From that time, during a period of forty years, while in college or as a teacher, in this country or abroad, he corresponded with his mother, writing semi-monthly letters, and each looked for the other's letters on the day they were due, and were rarely disappointed, for they were as sure to come as the sun was to rise on that day. To this aged mother, this affliction comes most heavily, but she is not one who sorrows without hope. She expects to meet the loved one again, where "God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes," and they shall never say good-by. Prof. Bush's funeral was held at the Bethany Congregational church in Quincy, Mass., Oct 18. The Rev. Edward Norton, pastor emeritus of the church read the Scriptures. The Rev. C.W. Wilder, of West Quincy Methodist Episcopal church, a former associate teacher at Montpelier, Vt., and Rev. Mr. Davis of Lynn, a former pupil, each paid a loving tribute to his character and life as a faithful exemplary teacher. The Rev. Mr. Cushing, pastor of the Methodist Episcopal church at Maplewood, which Prof. Bush attended, offered the closing prayer. The interment was at Mt. Wallaston cemetery.
