A Remarkable Nonagenarian

TCS Note: The 1898 obituary of Professor George Gary Bush indicates that he wrote this article about his mother.
We present herewith the portrait of Mrs. Olive B. Lee, whose ninetieth anniversary of her birth will be celebrated on Saturday of this week. She came into a world very different from that in which we live to-day. However, accustoming herself to one change after another during her long life, she is as modern in her thoughts and ways as any of her children. Active in mind and body and suffering little from the infirmities of age, this mother in Israel has a rich inheritance of friendships, and her love falls as a benediction upon all her kindred and friends. Her eyesight, hearing, and all her senses are as good as those of most people who are still in middle life, and during the past winter she has been busy in making garments for some of the black children she knows in Florida. She takes great delight in fine needle work, and has made during recent years many gifts of her handiwork to her friends. Her childhood was spent in the vicinity of Rome, N.Y., not far from where she was born. At about the age of seventeen she saw Gen. Lafayette in Auburn, N.Y., during his memorable visit to this country, and this event made a lasting impression on her memory. In October, 1829, she was married to Isaac W. Bush, and went as a bride to the then nearly new territory of Lewis Co., N.Y., where she began life on a farm near Houseville, in the town of Turin. Here for nearly thirty years she performed the arduous work?much more arduous then than now?of a wife?s part on a dairy farm. Here she reared six children, all of whom are still living, the eldest being Mrs. Jane M. Lee of Turin, whose span of life lacks but two and a half years of the allotted three score and ten. In 1853, the husband was taken suddenly away, a most crushing blow to her. A few days ago, on the forty-fifth anniversary of his death, she wrote, ?I did not think that we could live and get along without his help, his company and care.? He was truly a man of God and a devout Methodist whose memory will always be cherished in the community.
In 1874, after her second widowhood, she went to live with he youngest child, Mrs. F. F. Wendell, of Fort Plain, N.Y., and here she has since made her home, though paying frequent visits to other children. When past eighty years of age she spent two winters with some of her children in Central Florida, and still goes there nearly every summer to spend a few months with kindred near Boston. [TCS Note: Prof. Bush?s obituary indicates that he spent winters in Florida and lived near Boston, so this clearly is a self reference.] She has been a life-long and devoted member of the Methodist Episcopal Church. Her religious life has been deep and always in evidence, a constant joy to herself, and a source of help to her family and friends, as well as to the Church. She loves to dwell upon the early days of Methodism, and tell of the victories of our Church when the century was new. She prizes very highly the weekly visits of the Northern Christian Advocate and has through all of its history been one of its constant friends. Long may her life be spared, and her memory ever remain a sweet fragrance!
