      Harlan Dahl
      April 22, 1925 - June 5, 2013

Harlan Arthur Dahl age 88 of Milton, a man of great wisdom, faith and strength, died peacefully in his home on June 5, 2013. Harlan was born in Detroit, Michigan, the only child of Henry and Anna Dahl and into a family heritage of Norwegian immigrants which he proudly embraced. He grew up in Detroit and much to this mother?s dismay, 2 months after his high school graduation, enlisted in the US Navy in 1943. He became a radioman on the USS Soley, a destroyer commissioned in the Pacific. In Harlan?s words, ?My years of military service constitute the most significant period of my life. As minor as my contribution may have been, I can think of no greater privilege and honor than to have served my country in time of war. ?
Services will be held at 3pm on Monday, June 10th at Alpharetta Presbyterian Church. In lieu of flowers, Harlan?s family has set up a fund in his name at Fisher House Foundation, Inc, an organization providing free lodging to veterans and military families receiving treatment at military medical centers.

Harlan is survived by his wife of 62 years, Marylyn Burrell Dahl. Harlan and Marylyn married in 1951 and enjoyed a wonderful life together starting in Detroit Michigan and later moving to the Atlanta area in 1958. Here they raised their 3 daughters and became extremely involved members of the Lutheran Church of the Apostles in Sandy Springs. Harlan was a devoted and loving husband and father to his family. Harlan had an accomplished career as a Branch Manager for Sun Life of Canada.
Throughout Harlan?s life he had many loves and interests. As a young boy he raised money by restoring cars and this passion for antique cars remained throughout his life. In the late 60?s, Harlan acted upon a life time dream and learned to pilot airplanes. Many a year was spent at the Dekalb-Peachtree airport polishing and flying his various planes over a 20 year period to various locations in the US and Canada. He also restored many antique cars and could occasionally be seen rumbling down the road in his Model A with his daughters in the rumble seat. Every year, he attended many car shows around the country, his favorite being in Hershey, Pennsylvania. His love and talent prepared him to become a certified judge of antique cars. Later in life, he expanded his passion by becoming a certified auto appraiser.
Always the avid reader, Harlan could knowledgably speak with anyone about any subject. He was able to apply his knowledge in every way from home construction projects to sewing his own upholstery for his car restoration projects. Friends and family came to Harlan often for car repair advice and for his help in finding the perfect used car. He was always eager to help with any problem brought his way.

Harlan was a man of God. Even at the time of his death, he was actively involved in Bible study at his church, Alpharetta Presbyterian. Throughout his life he embraced the grace and peace that comes with knowing Our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. As stated in his favorite verse from the book of Micah, Chapter 6, Verse 8; ?He has told you, O man, what is good; And what does the Lord require of you? To do justice, to love kindness and to walk humbly with your God.?
Harlan?s surviving family is as follows: His wife, Marylyn, daughters and sons in law, Kris and Merritt Guthrie, Nancy and Lin Harrison and Judy and Peter Stoddard, along with 10 grandchildren ranging in age from 9 years to 32 years of age.
Harlan loved humor and he his family recalls his quick wit, particularly his love for telling Ole and Lena jokes. Ole and Lena are central characters in jokes by Scandinavian Americans, particularly in the Upper Midwest region of the U.S., where Scandinavian immigrant traditions are common.
Several years ago, Harlan created his life history, which was the most amazing gift he could possibly bestow upon his family. Through this story, Harlan?s life along with his many experiences and memories remain forever in our minds and in our hearts.
