Notes |
- From Oral Roberts: An American Life, by David Erwin Howell, Jr. 1985. Indiana University Press. https://books.google.com/books?id=rtz1InGWAmYC&pg=PA136
p. 136
The Roberts Jewish Outreach was shaped and guided by Myron Sackett who joined the organization in mid-1955 and remained the director of the Jewish program until his death in 1967. Sackett was a pentecostal evangelist who early in his life had managed Aimee Semple McPherson's campaigns, but, beginning in 1945, he felt a call to "take the gospel" to the Jewish people. Between 1945 and 1949, Sackett made a number of trips to Israel trying to formulate a strategy for accomplishing that task, and concluded that the best hope was to get copies of the Bible into the hands of as many Jewish people as possible. In 1951 Sackett founded an organization, Christian Friends of Israel, Inc., with a fivefold purpose . . . .
Sackett was introduced to Oral by Bob DeWeese in January 1955 during a crusade in Phoenix, and Sackett explained to Oral his vision of distributing Bibles among the Jews. Oral told Sackett, "Doc, when I was a young man, the Lord impressed me about a ministry to the Holy Land." Oral loaned Sackett a
p. 137
copy of Venture into Faith, and he made German subtitles for the film before showing it during a tour of Europe and Israel. Oral was delighted with Sackett's work; the friendship between the two grew, and in December Sackett served as Oral's guide in Israel when he made his first trip abroad.
In April 1954, Oral invited Sackett to integrate his work into the Roberts ministry as one of the World Outreaches, and Sackett gratefully accepted the offer. Sackett was delighted, believing that Oral had the "same vision and burdens as I do to take the gospel to the Jewish people around the world" and recognizing that Oral's fund-raising abilities far exceeded his own. Some believed that Sackett's vision was used by Roberts as a fund-raising gimmick, but the old warrior never seemed to think that was the case. He believed, probably correctly, that he could never have accomplished alone what he did as a part of the Roberts ministry.
More difficult to evaluate is the long-range impact of the highly publicized outreach to Israel. Depending on one's perspective, the accomplishments of the outreach seem both minimal and somewhat impressive. Sackett's plan was simply to distribute Hebrew Bibles to Jews all over the world, including in Israel. The Roberts ministry frequently solicited funds for the printing the Bibles (which was done in Sweden) but the most difficult chore was to find ways to give them away. In 1957, Oral reported: "While we have distributed only a few hundred Bibles in the Hebrew language in the last year, we have been working with all skill at our command to be ready to give more Bibles when the door opens." It was a testimony to the ingenuity of Sackett that at the time of his death Oral estimated that the organization had "placed more than 150,000 Hebrew Bibles in Jewish homes in nearly 25 countries.
------
The 1932 Cedar City, Iowa city directory indicates that Myron was pastor Foursquare Gospel Temple in 1932. The West Coast Bible College yearbook for 1945 carries an advertisement from the Capitol District (California) of Foursquare identifying Rev. and Mrs. Myron M. Sackett as pastors of Oakland Foursquare Church.

Paul,
Thanks for your message. You are correct that Myson is actually Myron.
The couple concerned were Rev Myron Mace Sackett and Frances Mae Sheerlein. They were married in Medina, Ohio, in 1928. My abstract from their marriage record is:
"Ohio, County Marriages, 1789–-2013," digital image, LDS FamilySearch (https://www.familysearch.org), "26 Jun 1928, at Medina, Ohio, Myron Mace Sackett, 28 on 30 Oct 1927, of Conneaut, Ohio, b. Leechburg, PA, occ. Minister, prev. m. once, father Edward Sackett, mother Bertha Steinheiser; to Frances Mae Sheerlein, 22 on 2 Feb 1928, of York Township, Medina Co, O, school teacher, single, father George J Sheerlein, mother Ella Brandow. By Rev Daisy Martin, Four Square Gospel Church, Minister."
The Rev Myron M Sackett was listed in the Cedar Rapids, Iowa, City Directory for 1932 and 1935, when he was the pastor of the Four Square Tabernacle there.
In 1940 he and Frances Mae were living in Glendale, Los Angeles County, California. Her parents George and Ella were living with them. Myron was a field supervisor, evangelical work, and Frances a stenographer, evangelical work.
Our records do not at the moment include Myron. Thanks to your message we will now add his record. His father Edward Sackett is in our records at http://sackett-tree.org/getperson.php?personID=I13417&tree=1 .
I assume from your email address that you are in the UK, and am intrigued that the bible has the names of these individuals from the USA. It may be of considerable help to us if you were able to give us details of the entries in the bible. If you were able to send scanned images or photos of the relevant bible pages, that would be most helpful.
I am copying this to Ted Smith who now maintains Thurmon King?s Sackett Family Database. Perhaps you would address any replies to both of us.
Regards,
Chris Sackett
