  • Notes
    • 1760 Dec 26 - Aaron Sackett, 3/7 child of Reuben and Mercy Finney Sacket was born in East Greenwich (now Hebron), Conneticut. (Note: The Sacketts of America, by Charles H. Weygant, 1907, p. 109.)

      c.1770 - Dorcas Clark mother of Thomas Sackett born in Maryland. (Note: Dorcas died 10 Apr 1857 at 87 years. Will mentions 5 children sons Thomas (eldest), John (deceased), Samuel and daughters Phebe Mosteller and Sarah Watt. -SHD)

      25 Apr 1778 Westmoreland Co militia had an Aaron Sackett - not sure if it is the same one. [From: Laurie Young, source not given] [Note: The traditional history of the Sackett family has held that Aaron and his brother, Dr. Samuel, moved from CT. to PA together. If the Aaron Sackett listed in Westmoreland Co. in 1778 is the same as Aaron Sackett, son of Reuben Sackett and Mercy Finney, then he would have made the move two years ahead of his brother and done so at the age of 18 years. - T. King]

      1780 - The year the brothers, Cyrus, Aaron, and Dr. Samuel are said to have moved from CT. to PA. In an account written about Dr. Samuel we read: In the year of 1780 he moved to Westmoreland County Pennsylvania. In a letter still preserved, dated Shistee Settlement, Youghiogheny County, [PA.] October 27, 1780, he writes to friends in Connecticut: "I do not think I can cross the mountains back home until spring. There are no doctors here between Pittsburg and Wheeling, and all the way is thickly settled. It is a healthy looking country. I do not think I will get much to do until I get acquainted with the people. Tell Jonathan Hamilton I think this is the best place for land jobbing in the thirteen states, and in case of invasion by Indians it is supposed that fifteen hundred men would rid them out." This would indicate that his first place of residence was in what is now Washington County. He then moved back east a few miles into what is now Fayette County; as stated in the family record, under date of September 15, 1781, he writes: "We set out from New England to come to Redstone township, and arrived at Beesontown, or Uniontown, on October 16, 1781." [Genealogical and Personal History of Fayette County Pennsylvania; Under the Editorial Supervision of John W. Jordan, LL.D., and James Hadden, of Uniontown, Pennsylvania; Illustrated, Volume II.; Lewis Hisstorical Publishing Company, New York, 1912.; Sacket/Sackett on Pages 341-344]
      From the quotes above, it would appear that Dr. Samuel had made an exploritory trip from CT. to PA. in 1780 and then returned to CT. and moved to PA. with his family in 1781. - [T. King]

      1782 - In Cross Creek Twp., Washington Co., PA., Aaron Sackett was a signer of a petition which was sent to Gen. Wm. Irvine, commander of the Western Dept, at Fort Pitt, requesting that he send a few men to help garrison Fort Wells and the mill of Alexander Wells as a protection for the inhabitants near the mill against attack. [Source: Photocopies of pages from "The Frontier Forts of Western Pennsylvania"; Well's Fort; pages 421-423. (Author, Publisher, and Date of publication not known). [Material from Laurie Young]

      14 March 1784 - A Deed is made (and recorded on the 16th) between "Aaron Sackett of the Town of UNION in the County of Fayette and State of Pennsylvainia, aforesaid is a Taylor" and Henry Beeson, founder of Union, for Lot #7 in that town. [Photocopy of the Deed sent by Laurie Young]

      1785 - Aaron Sackett married in Fayette Co., PA. as indicated in;
      1) A letter from Aaron to his brother (Possibly Cyrus but the letter was in the possession of Dr. Samuel Sackett) dated 18 Dec 1785 in which he says: "and if you could come and settle up with every body I should be glad for I exspect to lose every thing that I have if you don't ... I exspect a writ sarved on me in a few Days and it will be hard for me to suffer for your Debts which I never Contracted for and if they make out any thing a gainst me it will ruin me for I am jest beginning in the world";
      2) A letter written by their sister Violitty from Warren, CT. to Dr Samuel in Fayette Co., PA. dated 27 Apr 1786 in which she says: "I have no knews to write to you. give my warmest compliments to your family and to Aron and an his wife." The last letter incicates that Aaron was living near enough to Dr. Samuel to be expected to pass the greeting on to Aaron and his wife. [Source: The Sackett Letters]

      Abt. 1786 - Phebe Sackett 1/5 child of Aaron and Dorcas Sackett b. Uniontown, Fayette Co., PA.

      1787 Apr 30 - Thomas Sackett, 2/5 child of Aaron and Dorcas Sackett, born in Uniontown, Fayette Co. PA.

      12 April 1789 - Aaron Sackett conveys Lot #7 in the town of Union, Fayette Co., PA. to _______ ?Wells? This is described as the same lot Aaron had received from Henry Beeson on 17 Mar 1784. [From a poor quality photocopy of the deed which has been reduced in size to fit on an 8 1.2" X 11" page. - Supplied by Laurie Young]

      [Note by T.King: Samuel Sacket above is the brother of Aaron.]

      07 Jun 1793, John W. Sackett 4/5 child of Aaron and Dorcas Sackett b. Uniontown, Fayette Co., PA.

      1796 or 1797 - Aaron and his family moved to the Hamilton Co. area of Ohio as shown in a letter Aaron wrote from Mill Creek in Ohio dated 6 Aug 1797 in which he says: "Dear Brother I received yours of 20 June and was glad to hear that you were all well for I had no particular a Count from you after we left thair till now." And: "the a Count that Thomas Masterson gave you was trew for Our family Was so sick that we was a blige to Lay by and Marsterson Was so uneasy that we thought best to sell him the tote bote and if we did not like to git a flat botom bote and go as we liked the reason that I did not mention aney thing about that was be Cause the note was given to Clark and me and he has ben going up Every week or too Ever Since Last fall and aint gone yet." Dr. Samuel had written a letter which Aaron received 20 Jun 1797 which was the first he had heard from his brother since Aaron had arrived in Ohio. The reference to either Thomas Masterson, or Clark having "ben going up Every week or too Ever Since Last fall and aint gone yet" could indicate that Aaron had been there the previous fall.

      In this letter Aaron also makes a reference to another land transaction which must have taken place shortly before Aaron moved to Ohio: "and if Wm Wheeler Dont Chose to Keep that Land if I am not Mistaken he is Obligated to get a deed for it before he Can recover his pay back but if he aint Obligated to give me a deed in a return of his pay he must sign his right back and have his pay from Oliphent:" The record of this transaction should be found in Fayette Co., PA. records [Source: The Sackett Letters]

      1 Sep 1797 - Aaron and Dorcas have a son, Samuel born in what is now Butler Co., OH. Samuel was the last of the five children of Aaron and Dorcas. The year given for the birth of Dorcas is 1770 which would indicate that she was 27 years old when Samuel was born. In a letter Aaron wrote from Miamme, OH. to his brother, Dr. Samuel in PA., dated 21 Oct 1797, he says: "Darcas lay three Weeks all most with out aney hopes of Ever Getting up a gain but when she begun to mend She Got up in a short time". Laurie Young pointed out that this could indicate that Dorcas had problems with the birth of Samuel. This reference could also be an indication as to why they had no more children. This letter also includes a mention of Barsil (Barzilla?) Clark who is believed to be a brother to Dorcas: "I want that you should tell Barsil Clark if he has Ever arrived that I want thet he Should fetch me down a stove about the sise of that is in the Methedis Metenhouse in Besen town I would not that he should fail of fetching a stove for the price of one tell him that his family is Well and Wants to hear from him." 1805 Nov 23 - Thomas Sacket and Catharine Chambers marry in Hamilton, Butler Co. OH.
      (SHD Note: This record of marriage, along with the 1808 marriage date, is presented by some but since Thomas would have only been 18 at the time appears unlikely.) [The Butler Co., OH. website has transcriptions of the Ohio marriage records before 1820 and gives the 1805 date for the Chambers/Sackett marriage while the Sackett/Chambers record gives the 1808 date. A post by Alyce Beggs states that the 1805 date is a transcription error and that the micro film has the 1808 date. - T.King]

      Bef Christmas 1805 - Phoebe Sackett, daughter of Aaron and Dorcas, married Christopher Mosteller. As indicated in a letter written by Aaron's brother Cyrus from Greene Co., OH. to their brother Dr. Samuel in PA., dated 27 Jan 1806, in which Cyrus says: "Brother Aaron was hear the week before Christmas and they ware all well then he has not got any land yet: Feby got maried to a man by the name of Christopher Mosteller a hater by trade."
