At almost 100, Albert James Foster still enjoys playing the organ, watching basketball and football and keeping track of his family.

An open house birthday celebration will be 2-4 p.m. Sunday at Alterra Sterling House, 3700 S. A St. in Richmond.

"I thank the Lord for my long life. I didn't do anything special that would make me live long that I know of," he said.

"I look forward to my birthday and can't hardly believe it myself. I wanted to get to 99 -- I think I'll make 100. I don't know if I'll get 101."

He was born Jan. 31, 1907, at Reid Hospital in Richmond. Dr. Davis was his mother's doctor.

"My mother said he (Davis) looked at me and said he wouldn't give 15 cents for that kid you've got there and here I am, 100," Foster said.

Foster, a 1925 Morton High School graduate, was a jazz saxophonist until about 1935. He played with the Paul Kring band in Richmond and also took jobs out of town, traveling with the D.D. Murphy Shows.

"I never played with any big-name bands," Foster said.

He played on a Starr-Gennett recording of "Take Me Out to the Ball Game," which was requested by the Cincinnati Reds.

"They played that before the game," he said.

Later in life, he wanted to play the organ so he learned and performed at the grand opening of the Richmond Senior Community Center. He still plays in his room at Alterra.

"I can't play it to save my life, but I keep trying," Foster said. "I'm not good enough to get out and play with anybody."

While he still enjoys music, he isn't interested in today's popular music.

"The stuff they're playing now I wouldn't want to cross the street to hear it," Foster said.

After playing with bands, he thought he should have a regular job and began working loading the mail truck for the Pennsylvania Railroad in 1943.

"When I worked for the Pennsylvania Railroad, down there (at the depot) sometimes, especially when the war was going on, there'd be so many people you couldn't could get the mail truck through the crowd," Foster said.

He also worked in the railroad's equipment maintenance department, where he served as a car inspector in the freight yards. He retired in 1972.

"I've been retired longer than I worked for them. I worked there for 29 years," he said.

He wed Daisy Dixon of Columbus, Ga., and they were married 56 years before her death in 2001.

He has one daughter, Rachel Stella of Richmond, three grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.

With his longevity, Foster is saddened that most of his friends are gone.

"Sometimes I sit there and I can't believe it. It makes you feel funny to be alone," Foster said.
