Histories |
 | 2 Sons of Dr. David Sackett on Rival Sides in Civil War Edited OCR:
The story of Dr. David L. Sackett, pioneer Wayne county physician, dealt with in a previous article, told an interesting tale of early life in the settlement which grew into Richmond.
No less colorful are the histories of his descendants. Two of his sons served in the Union army and one with the Confederate forces.

AGED PRINTER DIED YESTERDAY
CYRUS SACKETT, BROTHER OF MRS. ELLEN BERRY, CALLED "THIRTY."
He Was Born at Centerville and Served in the Union Army Through the War.
[Special to The Item.]
Indianapolis, Ind., Oct. 24. -- Cyrus Oran Sackett, 72 years old, and among the last of the old-time printers of the city, died yesterday at the home of Mrs. W. S. Elliott, 315 North Noble street. Death was caused by the infirmities of age.
For nearly half a century Sackett was employed on the various newspapers and in job printing offices of the city, a greater part of his career as a printer being spent with the Journal Printing company. He was also employed on ,the Indianapolis Sentinel and on practically all of the newspapers that existed in Indianapolis In the last fifty years. He was one of the early members of Typographical Union No. 1.
Sackett was born in Centerville, July 1, 1834. His parents were Dr. and Mrs. David Sackett, who were numbered among the influential people of the state at the time. In 1853 he came to Indianapolis to learn the printer's trade and had resided here since that time.
Almost at the first call for troops, at the beginning of the Civil War, Sackett left his type cases and forms to wear the blue of the Union army. He was made fife major of the Seventieth Indiana Volunteer Regiment, which was commanded by Benjamin Harrison. At the conclusion of the war he returned to this city and again engaged at his trade.
Mr. Sackett never married and for thirty years had made his home with Mrs. Elliott and her family. He was regarded as one of the family and during his declining years was cared for tenderly. He had been retired from active labor for some time.
The funeral will be held at 2 o'clock tomorrow afternoon from the Eliott home and burial will be at Crown Hill. The funeral and burial will be private, but friends will be invited to call at the house between 7 o'clock and 9 o'clock tonight.
Two sisters, Mrs. W. J. Medearie, of this city, and Mrs. Ellen Berry, of Richmond, survive.
