James W Sackett Jr., born March 26th 1960, in Mentor, OH died peacefully at home surrounded by family at the age of 64 on November 8th, 2024. He was a beloved husband, father, brother, uncle, and friend. Jim lived a life rich in accomplishments, adventures, and love, leaving a lasting impression on those who knew him.
Jim was a gifted and driven individual. He earned his bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from Ohio University before furthering his education with a Master's Degree in Finance from the University of Houston. His academic and professional journey led him to a distinguished career which began at NASA in Houston, TX designing refrigeration systems for the space shuttle program. He then moved to Fort Myers, FL to join the family boat building business as chief financial officer. Following that, he and his wife, Becky, moved to Moscow, Russia with NASA, where he worked to deliver a space module to the MIR space station. While there, he also worked for Lockheed Martin and was instrumental in establishing the USA's program to acquire rocket boost technology for the Atlas III space program. He took immense pride in his contributions to space exploration. Jim and Becky's time overseas provided them multiple opportunities to travel the world and enjoy many adventures together.
An entrepreneur at heart, Jim was always seeking new challenges and opportunities. After 10 years living abroad, Jim and his family settled back to his home town of Mentor, OH where he started his own materials import business. Jim was a skilled handyman always ready to lend a hand and fix anything that needed fixing.
Jim grew up sailing at Mentor Harbor Yachting Club and was an avid racer, known for his competitive spirit and unwavering determination on the water. Jim's love of sailing took him across the Atlantic Ocean and cemented him as a fixture in the local racing community.
Above all, Jim was a devoted family man. He was a loving husband to Becky Sackett, an inspiring father to Taylor Jane Sackett, and a dedicated brother to Karen Sackett Rampe (Richard Spine) and Steve Sackett (Cynda), Step Brother to Cindy Hamilton (Paul Stanard), Connie Sackett (Tod) and John Sackett. Uncle to Corinne Sackett, Brad Sackett, John Sackett Rampe and Stepson to Carole Sackett. Jim was preceded in death by his mother Barbara Major and father James Walter Sackett Sr.
Jim will be remembered for his brilliant mind, competitive spirit, and the warmth and generosity he showed to those he loved. Celebration of Life will be held at Mentor Harbor Yachting Club on November 23rd, 2024 from the hours of 2:00pm to 6:00pm. In lieu of flowers please consider donating to the Mentor Harbor Youth Sailing association (mhysaweb.org).

age 81, passed away Oct 4, 2018 after a long illness. Jim was born in Shaker Hts., OH, lived in Cape Coral, FL and Mentor, OH. Jim attended University School and graduated from Case Western Reserve University with a dual major in Physics and Chemistry. He was employed by B&O Railroad testing fuel for train engines and was a member of their emergency response team. He then worked in sales for Sherman Williams, with the introduction of spray can technology. He was Vice-President of Sales for Merriman-Holbrook, working with a long time friend of 71 yrs, Pat Black, until the business was sold. From there, Jim & Carole moved to Florida and started Ft. Myers Yacht & Shipbuilding, building 44 ft Blue Water Cruising Sailboats called Brewer 44's. After 12 years they returned to Mentor. In the past few years he found great enjoyment in being a "Mystery Shopper". Jim was a kind and loving father and an accomplished, avid sailboat racer. He spent a large part of his life racing on many family boats all called "Sesame". Starting in 1999, he never missed a race on the family T-10, "Cracker", that he faithfully and enthusiastically raced with his children. His love of the water and the camaraderie that it brought with family and friends was truly his passion. Jim was a member of Mentor Harbor Yachting Club for 60 years and sailed 25 Mackinaw Races, 6 Newport to Bermuda races, many St. Pete to Ft. Lauderdale races, and a few to Isla Mujeres, Mexico. Jim is survived by his wife of 42 years, Carole McBride Sackett, son James (Becky) Sackett, Jr., daughter Karen (Richard Spine) Sackett-Rampe, son Steven (Cynda) Sackett, step-children Cindy (Paul Stanard) Hamilton, Connie (Tod) Sackett, John (Val Gill) Sackett, grandchildren, Lee and Amanda Sackett, Drew (Kristin) Hamilton, Corinne and Bradley Sackett, John Sackett Rampe, Taylor Sackett, great-granddaughter, Lila Hamilton, brother Joe Sackett, cousin Bob Sackett, many nieces and nephews, and his beloved Great Pyrenees dog, Sam. Preceded in death by parents, George and Cora Sackett, brothers, George (Deborah) Sackett II, and Jack (Denny) Sackett. There will be a Celebration of Life on Saturday, November 3 from 3:00 to 6:00 at Mentor Harbor Yachting Club for family and friends. Donations may be made in lieu of flowers to Mentor Harbor Youth Sailing Association, c/o Mentor Harbor Yachting Club, 5330 Coronada Drive, OH 44060. Potti Funeral Homes is in charge of arrangements.
