Hervey Vassar, Prominent Citizen of Bloomfield, Dies
Hervey Sackett Vassar, 73, retired laboratory engineer for Public Service Electric and Gas Company and Bloomfield's outstanding citizen of 1945, died yesterday in his home, 39 Willard Avenue, Bloomfield, after a long illness. At the time of his retirement in 1947, Mr. Vassar headed the Public Service laboratory in Maplewood. He had served 44 years with the firm and its predecessor companies.
Mr. Vassar was born in Flemington and attended public schools in Newark and Kansas City, Mo. He was graduated from Pratt Institute in 1903. Long active in church, civic end professional circles, he was chosen as Bloomfield's most outstanding citizen in 1945 "in grateful recognition of his outstanding contribution to civic welfare." The award is presented annually by Miles A. Suarez Post 711, Veterans of Foreign Wars. In the 1920s Mr. Vassar was president for three years of World War I Memorial Association, which administered the town Community House. He later organized and headed the Recreation Commission, serving a year as Its president.
Mr. Vassar was at one time chairman of the Bloomfield Red Cross Chapter and from 1939 to 1944, was president of the Bloomfield Community Chest. He was a trustee of the Bloomfield League for Friendly Service, trustee and charter member of Central Baptist Church of East Orange-Bloofield, and a trustee and chairman of the house and grounds committee of Mountainside Hospital, Montclair. He was also past president of the American Society for Testing Materials, a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and a member of the American Institute of Electrical Engineers and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.
Mr. Vassar is survived by his wife, Mrs. Helen Provost Vassar; two sons, Hervey P., of Plainfield, and Thomas Edwin, of Louisville, Ky.; a daughter. Miss Eunice Vassar, of New York City, and a sister, Mrs. Anvenette V. Morten, of Plainfield.
