Anne Frances Robbins was born on July 6, 1921 at Sloane Hospital for Women in the Washington Heights section of New York City.[1][2] When Nancy Davis signed with MGM, she gave her birth date as July 6, 1923, shaving two years off her age, a common practice in Hollywood (see Cannon, Governor Reagan, p. 75). This caused subsequent confusion as some sources would continue to use the incorrect birth year.[3][4] She was the only child of Kenneth Seymour Robbins (1894?1972), the son of a once-well-to-do family who worked as a car salesman,[1][5][6] and his actress wife, radio actress Edith Prescott Luckett (1888?1987).[7][8][9][10][11] Her godmother was silent-film-star Alla Nazimova.[12] From birth, she was commonly called Nancy.[13]
She lived her first two years in Flushing, Queens, in New York City, in a two-story house on Roosevelt Avenue between 149th and 150th Streets.[14] Her parents separated soon after her birth and were divorced in 1928.[1][15][11] After their separation, her mother traveled the country to pursue acting jobs and Nancy was raised in Bethesda, Maryland, for six years by her aunt, Virginia Luckett and uncle, Audley Gailbraith.[1][15] Nancy described longing for her mother during those years: "My favorite times were when Mother had a job in New York, and Aunt Virgie would take me by train to stay with her."[16]
In 1929, her mother married Loyal Edward Davis (1896?1982), a prominent politically conservative neurosurgeon who moved the family to Chicago.[1][2] Nancy and her stepfather got along very well;[17] Nancy later wrote that he was "a man of great integrity who exemplified old-fashioned values."[18] He formally adopted her in 1935,[2] and she would always refer to him as her father.[17] At the time of the adoption, her name was legally changed to Nancy Davis.[13] She attended the Girls' Latin School of Chicago (describing herself as an average student), graduated in 1939, and later attended Smith College in Massachusetts, where she majored in English and drama and graduated in 1943.[11][19]

Presidential First Lady. She was the wife of 40th United States President Ronald Wilson Reagan, and served as Presidential First Lady during his two terms in office from 1981 to 1989. Born Anne Frances Robbins in New York City, New York in 1921, when she was 6 years old, her mother married Dr. Loyal Davis, who later adopted her. Soon after, the family moved to Chicago where Nancy grew up. She received her formal education at Girls' Latin School and at Smith College in Massachusetts, where she majored in theater. Soon after graduation she became a professional actress. She toured with a road company and appeared on Broadway. One of those performances drew an offer from Hollywood. Billed as Nancy Davis, she performed in 11 films from 1949 to 1956. Her first screen role was in "Shadow on the Wall." Other releases included "The Next Voice You Hear" and "East Side, West Side." In her last movie, "Hellcats of the Navy," she played opposite her husband. She had met Ronald Reagan in 1951, when he was president of the Screen Actors Guild. The following year they were married in a simple ceremony in Los Angeles. Mrs. Reagan soon retired from making movies so she "could be the wife I wanted to be. A woman's real happiness and real fulfillment come from within the home with her husband and children," she says. President and Mrs. Reagan have a daughter, Patricia Ann, and a son, Ronald Prescott. She is also step-mother to Maureen Reagan (1/4/1941-8/8/2001) and Michael Reagan, who are the former president's children by actress Jane Wyman. (bio by: Allcalmap)
