    • 1884 Census - Samuel is living in Newaygo with his parents. He is sixteen and already a painter.

      Newaygo County Marriage License, Book 3 page 130 has Samuel J. marrying Emma B. Hirdening on 3 July 1886. He is 19, was born in Warsaw, Indiana, and is a painter. She is 18 and was born in Michigan. They are both residents of Newaygo. J. G. Crozier, Minister, marries them with Francis Kincade and Rosa Harden of Newaygo as witnesses.

      1894 Brooks Township, Newaygo County, Michigan Census - Samuel J. is 27, Emma B. is 26, Laura E. is six and Johnny H. 4. Samuel was born in Indiana and all of the others in Michigan. He is a painter. Surname is spelled “Harding.”

      25 January 1900, “Local and General News,” Newaygo Republican:
      “Mrs. L. Dancer has puchased the restaurant and bakery of S. J. Harden.”

      8 February 1900, “Local and General News,” Newaygo Republican:
      “Mrs. L.I. Dancer has bought the bakery of S. J. Harden, opposite the post office, and is prepared to run a first class bakery and restaurant, where you can get all kinds of fresh baked goods at reasonable prices, also a good warm meal for only 20 cents.”

      22 February 1900, “Local and General News,” Newaygo Republican:
      “S.J. Harden has bought the LaRue property at Oakland Beach and will make a considerable change in the appearance of the place.”

      31 May 1900, “Local and General News,” Newaygo Republican:

      In the summer of 1900, Harden’s Pavillion was opened at Oakland Beach. The following advertisements were placed in the “Local and General News” column of the Newaygo Republican:
      21 June 1900:
      “Grand opening at Harden’s Pavillion Oakland Beach July 4th.” and, “Attend the opening dance at Harden’s Pavillion Oakland Beach July 4th.”
      28 June 1900, the same ads as above were recycled. In addition, “S. J. Harden will open his pavillion at Oakland Beach, next Wednesday, July 4th.”
      12 July 1900:
      “Everybody cordially invited to attend the dance at Harden’s pavillion, Hess Lake, Saturday evening July 14.” and, “the Crofoot Orchestra has been engaged for the season to play for the dances at Harden’s pavillion, Hess Lake.”
      19 July 1900:
      “Grand Rapids Ice Cream on sale at Harden’s every day, at Hess Lake. 30 cents per quart.”
      26 July 1900, the ice cream advertisement is repeated. In addition, “Dance at Harden’s Pavillion Oakland Beach Saturday eveing July 28.”
      2 August 1900:
      “Fresh bread (home made) and pastry goods on sale at Harden’s Hess Lake.”
      9, 16, 23 and 30 August 1900, the ice cream ad is repeated.
      6 and 13September 1900, both the ice cream and fresh bread ads are repeated.

      During the spring and summer of 1901, Samual places a number of advertisements in the Newaygo Republican, “Local and General News” section regarding the Oakland Beach Club:
      11 April 1901:
      “Join the Oakland Beach Club and secure club rates. Inquire of S.J. Harden for particulars.”
      “If you want a good place to rusticate this summer ask S.J. Harden, who will tell you all about the new Oakland Beach Club.”
      23 May 1901
      “Opening dance at Harden’s pavillion, Ottawa Beach, Wednesday evening, June 5th.” and, “Don’t forget the opening dance at Harden’s Ockland Beach. June 5th. Bill 5 cents a set.”
      30 May 1901
      “S.J. Harden will give an opening ball at his Oakland Beach pavillion on Wednesday evening, June 5th.” and, “Opening dance at Harden’s pavillion, Oakland Beach, Wednesday evening, June 5th.”
      20 June 1901
      “S.J. Harden will give a dance at his hall, Oakland Beach, on Saturday evening, June 22nd.” and, “There will be all sorts of fun at Oakland Beach on the 4th.”
      18 July 1901
      “S.J. Harden announces a free vaudeville show at his pavillion, Oakland Beach, this evening. He will also give a matinee on Sunday afternoon at 4 o’clock.”
      1 August 1901:
      “Dance at Harden’s pavillion, Oakland Beach, next Saturday evening.” and, “Remember the dance at Harden’s pavillion, Oakland Beach, Saturday evening, August 3rd.”

      Newaygo Republican, “Local and General News,” 16 May 1901:
      “S.J. Harden has hung 1,500 rolls of wall paper already and probably the other paper hangers have done equally as much, which would make about 6,000 rolls of paper put on the walls of Newaygo homes this spring. Building, repairing, painting and improvement is the order all along the line. Surely Newaygo is forging to the front.”

      Death certificate number 615 Kent County, Michigan has Samuel dying of organic disease of the heart on May 3, 1932 in Grand Rapids. He was born in Indiana, was a decorator and the son of Sarah Groobaugh and Samuel Harden, both born in Pennsylvania. He was 65 years, four months and 28 days old. [1]
