      Susie (Villa) Albers
Birth: Jun. 3, 1888; Los Angeles, Los Angeles County, California, USA
Death: Jul. 3, 1982; Redondo Beach, Los Angeles County, California, USA

      * Susie Villa Albers was born in a dirt poor time of Los Angeles history. Her Father, Pedro Villa, labored and her Mother, Louise Cowdry Villa stayed at home and raised the children. In all Susie was the 3rd child in a family of 10 children, some with Susie's Father and some with Louise's second Husband, Mr. Cordero. 9 were girls and 1 was a boy. In the 1880's/90's Los Angeles had a handful of extremely wealthy families but the vast majority of the population were hard Laborers. There was a whole year between Susie's birth and the age of 7 that she was paralyzed from head to toe with Infantile Paralysis. She said the nurse made her get up out of bed and forced her into a full recovery. They also had Child Labor in those days, so when Susie was 7 years old she worked as a maid at the Pico House, down the street from the Plaza at the end of Olvera Street - Los Angeles, CA. Susie had very thin hair, and the little girls used to pull hair out of horse's tails to braid it in with their own and that way they'd look like big fat braids. When Susie tried to pull the hair out she got kicked in the chest by the horse. Throughout Susie's life she used what she called a "rat" in her hair. It was simply her own hair cuttings rolled up inside a hair net and she'd brush her own hair up over the rat and it gave the appearance of having a fuller head of hair.
      * Susie was a hard worker all her life. She married Val Albers who disappeared on her when their daughters, Lillian Albers Shaw and Stella Albers Gray were small, never to be heard from again. Susie had heard rumors that perhaps he had joined the U.S.Army or something, but she never did hear anything more. Through my research at the San Francisco National Cemetery, I was able to locate his final resting place, and now the mystery is solved. He was in the U.S. Aero-Squadron - WWI. He died in 1924. Susie lived until 1982.
      * Susie raised the girls by working her fingers to the bone, folding towels, in laundries, under sweat-shop like conditions, for years until she retired at age 65 on Social Security. Susie told of the days when she worked a 60 hour work-week and brought home $7.00 - had to pay $4.00 for rent, $2.00 for groceries, and $1.00 for car fair. If she came up $1.00 short, she had to walk.
Susie was baptized Catholic, but never considered herself to be Catholic. She was married in the Catholic Church which she explained was the only church in Los Angeles at that time.
      * At one point Susie roomed with another single Mother of 2, named Della Ochoa Verges, and the two hard working women had to put their children in Day Care Schools. Susie worked for one of the schools that was owned by a Mrs. Buck. Later in the years this was determined to be the Day Care School owned and operated by the famous Writer, Pearl S. Buck.
      * In later years, Susie Villa Albers lived in Redondo Beach in a little cottage behind the main house where Stella Albers Gray and William Macy Gray resided. Susie gave her heart to the Lord at a very young age, but when she was older, she became a Born-Again Christian.
      * Susie Villa Albers went home to be with the Lord as she lay sleeping in her very own bed. She passed away with a smile on her face.
      * May we meet again, one day, in Heaven - Grandma Albers
